Newbury Park's Terry Pagano broke a 22-year-old record in the 31st Varsity Finals for the Ventura County Youth Track and Field Conference at Moorpark High on Saturday.

Terry Pagano captured the 200-meter dash in 23.55 seconds, breaking the 1986 record by Moorpark's Steve Carnes (23.9 hand timed).

Pagano's effort was one of the eight record-breaking performances in the 91-degree heat.

Ojai's Sam Strong prevailed in the Midget Boys' 80-meter hurdles in 13.5 seconds, breaking the 2005 record by Ventura's Klarq Treiberg (14.02).

Ojai's Cameron Kunde turned a 5-minute, 17.20-second 1,600-meter Bantam Boys' Division record. Michael Roman of Oxnard had the old record of 5:38 from 2001. Ojai's Spencer McCune was second in 5:27.99.

Oxnard's Benjamin Dixon established a record in Youth Boys with a 52.36 effort in the 400 run. The old record from 2005 was set by Ventura's Nick Bern and Oxnard's Jacque Lee, who both ran 53.90 to finish in a dead heat.

Newbury Park's Hannah Burdick added her name to the Intermediate Girls' shot put record book at 31-7. Camarillo's Kayla Lindquist had the 2007 record with a 31-1.

Thousand Oaks entered the record book in the 1,600 Youth Boys' relay. Seth Nickolaisen, Kevin Ho, Tomas Lopez and Dakota Philips ran a 3:55.33, to erase Moorpark's 1994 mark of 3:58 (hand time).

The Oxnard Stars 400-meter Youth Boys ran 46.88. Michael Brown, Dixon, D'Andrew Bonds and Matthew Lopez bettered the 1983 record of 47.7 by Moorpark.

Thousand Oaks turned a 66.7 in the 400 Gremlin Girls' relay with Rowan Cuadrado, Nina Haq, Jillian Erickson and Claire Liu. The old record was 67.37 by Camarillo in 2007.

The Thousand Oaks Flyers scored 93 medals, 11 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze. Scoring was through nine places. The Camarillo Cosmos had 58 medals, including 11 gold, eight silver and eight bronze. Oxnard had 40 medals, nine gold, eight silver and one bronze. Moorpark earned 46 medals and Newbury Park 42.

Thousand Oaks rolled up 62 medals, with 13 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze in the boys' division. The Oxnard Stars came home with 59 medals, 12 gold, 12 silver and seven bronze. Camarillo's depth provided 63 medals, six gold and six silver.

The conference has provided a wealth of standouts who went on to compete on the high school level.

Rio Mesa High's Valexsia Droughn, from the Oxnard Stars, was one of the fastest freshman girls in the CIF Divisional 100-meter finals (11.72) on Saturday at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

Droughn was one of the conference standouts the last two years in the Ventura County Youth Track and Field Conference.

The conference has been a strong feeder program for the area high school track and field programs.
