Suspected drunken driver injures officer

An Oxnard police officer was hurt Saturday when a suspected drunken driver rear-ended his patrol car.

Officer Kevin Gormley was stopped at Channel Islands Boulevard and Ventura Road in Oxnard on Saturday night when his car was hit by Samuel Miguel Gonzalez, 19, of Oxnard. The accident happened about 10:18 p.m.

Gormley was taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center with neck and back injuries, then released.

Gonzalez, who was not hurt, was booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of felony drunk driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license. He also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Bail was set at $55,000. Gonzalez remained in jail Sunday evening. A court date has been set for Tuesday.

Hope Officer Gormley is OK. Hope Mr. Gonzalez is off our streets for a long, long time.

I hope the Officer is back on his feet soon. Im sure he is in pain........ this happened not long ago to my husband. People need to watch the vehicles ahead of them..........and most of all DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE !!!!!!!!

I'd like to extend my wishes to Officer Kevin Gormley for a full and speedy recovery, along with my gratitude for his service to the community.

Also... if Samuel Miguel Gonzalez had an outstanding warrant for his arrest prior to this felony drunk driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license incident, in addition to injuring a law enforcement officer, why was he permitted any level of bail?

Sokol_kiev, you make a good point. Except, the fact that he injured an officer wouldn't necessarily dictate whether or not he got bail. The warrant itself should have kept him from having any bail, though.

No license, I am surprised that he didn't run away from the scene. Isn't that the usual procedure in these situations? Maybe he was to drunk to run. Thank you budweiser.

Samuel Gonzalez:
- No license
- Outstanding Warrant
- 19 years old and drinking
- 19 years old and drunk
- Drunk and driving
- Driving and hits car
- Car is a police car

Buh-bye Mr. Gonzalez!

What an idiot another "kid" trying to run over a cop.. I am sure this was not intentional rather too drunk to see the stopped car.. but either way this is completely unacceptable and I hope that he serves his time in jail for this. I am sure that once he gets out after doing his time.. his buddies will have a great big party waiting for him! And thus the circle of being a loser begins again...

I think I know the answer to my question, but I will ask anyway, why are all of these people with warrants out on the streets? Don't they know where they live, can't they go pick them up and throw their as@ in jail?
Do things like this have to happen in order for them to do something?
First the poor 2 year old in S.P. now this officer? Come on now!!

having a warrant does not necessarily preclude being released on bail. most warrants are bailable in and of themselves. from the bail amount given in the article, his warrant probably had a $5000 bail, as felony dui w/bodily injury only (as opposed to death) is generally about 50k.

the reason that a lot of people with warrants are out on the streets is that they give false addresses, tend to move around a lot, etc so the police and courts don't really "know" where they live.

best wishes to ofcr gormley for a speedy recovery.

He's 19 and driving drunk?? I thought you had to be 21 to drink alcohol in this country. He should not be drinking at all and I hope the person who bought he alcohol gets charged with a crime. My best wishes to the officer who did his job and prevented others from dying.

lilmamma,
Was the policeman's job to be rear-ended?
I think, in the case, he was just another victim.

You know you are an idiot when you:

Rear-end a police car,
while under the influence of alcohol,
don't have a driver's license
and....
you have an outstanding warrant.

Glad the Officer is okay and nobody else was hurt.

Kevin best of wishes and a speedy recovery....we need you out here!!! as for the 19 year old idiot..years ago you would have been in the ambulance following the officer...thank Rodney King for that one...thank God that the kid didn't seriously hurt anyone else(very busy intersection)...as for the bail and warrant it could have been $500 and the loser wouldn't bail out...

Officer Gormley=have a speedy recovery. You are needed back on the streets as soon as possible.

Regarding Gonzalez=Put him away and throw away the key. He is nothing but scum. He shouldn't be allowed on the streets ever again.

lilmamma=of course you have to be 21 to drink but these idiots don't care about the law, obviously this one doesn't, since he wasn't even driving with a license, had a warrent and so on.

Obviously, Gonzalez has no respect for the law or anything else. The first thing people like this will say is, no one will give me a chance, and won't take responsibility for his own actions, which speak for themselves. Wake up!!!!!!!

Funny if how when it comes to cops it always overly dramatic and emphasized dramatically. If he was working he would of say the damn fool coming behind him. Maybe he was sitting on the road like a normal cop without lights on and got rear ended. Is that right? Not saying this dumb kid is innocent. But justify how you can get rear ended that bad and not see it coming. Especially if he was on duty, what was he doing. I hate how the paper takes a simple incident which could of not even been his fault and blows it out of porportion.

Please justify how the cop was just a sitting duck and got hit without seeing him, and how he just hit a cop on a busy road. Even if your drunk come on you can notice a cop.

West_to_East, the officer may have been waiting for the red light to turn green! Depending the degree of Mr. Gonzales' intoxicaiton, Mr. Gonzales may have passed out and not seen the car. Per California law any person who rear ends another vehicle is cuplable no matter what. Even if the officer was stopped in the middle of the highway the person behind has the visability and must avoid the accident.

Speedy recovery Officer Grombley!

Officer Gormley, thank you for your service. Our family is praying for your speedy and full recovery.

West_to_East, where are you from? Sounds suspiciously like a case of injunctionitis. Are you and Mr. Gonzalez members of the same club?

Ouch . . . well, ya can't unring that bell, or rather alarm. You just put it right out there. Ignorance is a bigger threat to our safety than a drunk driver ever could be.

The evil tyrant shouted from his throne as the crowds cheered, "Regarding Gonzalez=Put him away and throw away the key. He is nothing but scum. He shouldn't be allowed on the streets ever again. My ancestors date back to our Founding Fathers who were doing everything humanly possible, to break free and get away from people like the two of you. Let me guess - Nazi Germany?

I'm not sure what it is you think your respecting, but it has nothing to do with the law or anything else this country stands for. I repeat, ignorance is a bigger threat to our safety than a drunk driver ever could be.

What is more dangerous, someone who gets drunk and does something really stupid, or people who are sober that truly believe their distorted evil thinking can be justified?

I love how people come on here and try to excuse away the criminals acts. I mean the guy was drunk and had warrants BEFORE he even collided with the officer's vehicle. If he had not rear ended the officer, he hopefully would have been stopped for drunk driving shortly after. I think that if he wouldn't have hit the officer, the officer would have noticed he was drunk and behind the wheel. Let's give credit to where credit is due here!

I would like to nominate this 19 year old for "Idiot of the Year" in Oxnard. Do we have that award here yet? I'm sure the city will be able to afford this award as soon as they increase the taxes one half of a percent like they are proposing. Then again, maybe not once they give all the city workers raises and dump money on a theater project, a field of dreams and sports complex that we really don't need? :-/

Did you all get the part where we can add illegal alien to this guys list of accomplishments? The Star didn't even mention that part. They seem to leave out legal status. Guess it isn't politically correct to mention illegal.

Posted by FedUp on May 22, 2008 at 9:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)

why would the STAR mention he was an illegal? they are so busy worrying about offending any hispanic who may actually read their newspapers, that they dont have time to report the real news. I would not be surprised if they start using only the first name of the criminals, just to keep the people in the dark over who is actually committing all these crimes.

Gramagracie

Well in the articel it never mentioned the cop was stopped at a red light or anything. Just rear ended so I don't understand where the red light came from, but you do have a point and that is California law. I just hate how people come on here and critisize people like they are any better and don't know the whole story, they just know what they read on an article. Funny, how these people are just so simple and dumb minded.

TimeArrow

I from Oxnard but I moved out, sorry some people can do that and see the world. Maybe if you expand and get the chance try it. Club? Come on. why don't you make sense and and about this topic.

catlover

Wow. Go to school stop watching Cartoons. Do me a favor and get some education, better yet take some social classes, civil rights classes, and crimiinal and justice class. You might understand my theory then child.

yotono

I mean read what i said again if you dont understand. I don't know how simple I can say it. It's called a theory.

SINCE EVERYONE IS SO PERFECT ON HERE LETS FIND OUT WHERE YOU ALL FROM AND WHAT YOU DO. WHAT KIND OF EDUCATION YOU HAVE (NOT MADE UP). IT'S SO EASY TO JUDGE BUT WHEN YOUR JUDGED IT'S WRONG ISN'T IT. MOSTLY PEOPLE JUDGE OTHER'S TO HIDE THEIR FAULTS. YOU CAN DISAGREE WITH ME IF YOU WANT I DON'T REALLY CARE. IT'S YOUR RIGHT AND YOUR OPINION, JUST LIKE I HAVE MINE.

the Star is pathetic. does anyone read this paper for a reason other than to laugh at how one sided & ridiculous it is????
I really doubt it.

the Star has a long history of being VERY VERY illegal immigration friendly & never reports on anything that says illegal immigrants should NOT be here and are ILLEGAL. even for these criminal stories, they ALWAYS leave out any information about the illegal status of the felon. talk about unbalanced and politically driven agenda news reporting. this 'paper' is run like a North Korean 'newspaper'. All stories are clearly 'cleansed' of any anti ILLEGAL immigration details.

people, the Star is a total sham. it is not a trustworthy source of balanced news reporting. it is much more on the lines of a communistic source of editorials.

Did any of u commentors know that Kevin Gormley was facing federal civil rights violations for taking part in the beating a proven innocent black man for no apparent reason. In fact, they released the man because they could not charge him with anything. I think a slight bump on his behind from a drunk kid isn't gonna hurt him as much as federal prison might hurt him. And to think he was my baseball coach. He should not be on the force along with the others who were involved in that tragic beating.
