Record-setting Ojai out-sizzles county
Ojai set a record Saturday with a high temperature of 102 degrees, beating the old mark set in 1970 of 93 degrees, according to Curt Caplan, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Most of Ventura County sweltered, with Camarillo hitting 88 degrees; Fillmore, 98 degrees, and Thousand Oaks posting a 96 degree-high. Temperatures in Oxnard, the site of the California Strawberry Festival, reached 87 degrees.
Simi Valley temperatures had not yet been posted on Saturday night, Caplan said.
"I can guarantee it was in the 100s there," he said.
National Weather Service officials said a high-pressure front over the West Coast combined with a weak offshore flow will continue to bring hot weather to the area, with cooler temperatures along the coasts.
Caplan predicts today's temperatures at the beaches will range from the mid-60s to the lower 70s.
Temperatures will rise to the 90s across most of the interior valleys, foothills and lower mountain elevations.
Weather Service officials are warning residents to never to leave children, the elderly or pets enclosed in vehicles because temperatures can quickly soar to life-threatening levels, even if the windows are partially opened.
