On Saturday, May 17, close to 1,500 excited 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students from 21 Simi Valley elementary schools gathered at Royal High School to participate in the annual Junior Olympics. The festivities, which the Simi Valley PTA/PTSA Council has organized for over 25 years, began on Friday with the much anticipated torch run. Throughout the day, schools held assemblies waiting for the torch to arrive at their school. Student representatives received the torch and then carried the torch onto the next school. On Saturday morning, students from Township, Madera, and Garden Grove carried the torch onto the field for the opening ceremonies. Simi Valley PTA/PTSA Council President, Michelle Scharf, acknowledged a proclamation received from the Simi Valley City Council proclaiming May 17, 2008, as "Junior Olympics Day".

Despite the heat, student athletes, who had been practicing for many weeks under the guidance of teacher and/or parent coaches, were anxious and nervous while waiting to compete in their events. Students participating in a variety of events such as long jump, running activities, tri-fitness, baskets per minute, softball throw, and volleyball were misted down with spray misters and kept cool with water and wet paper towels. Ribbons were awarded to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place winners. All of the events were manned by volunteers, school principals, and members of the Simi Valley PTA/PTSA Council as well as school board member Debbie Sandland and Dr. Riley, Director of Elementary Education. Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Scroggin and her cabinet, along with local DARE officers were also on hand to lend their support .

At the close of the day, tired student athletes, parents, and volunteers could be heard reflecting on the success of the day. Congratulations to all of the student athletes who competed! A big thank you to all of the volunteers for helping to make Junior Olympics an event students look forward to each year.
