If you're not registered to vote, now is the time to do so. Monday is the deadline to register to vote in California's June 3 primary election.
The June 3 election will be your chance to whittle down the candidate fields in a variety of state and federal legislative districts in preparation for Election Day in November. Two propositions also will be on the ballot, as well as a variety of local issues.
The election will also determine two county supervisor races, incumbent Kathy Long in the 3rd District, facing Socorro Lopez Hanson, and Steve Bennett in the 1st District, facing write-in candidate Jeff Ketelsen. Supervisor John Flynn is running for re-election in the 5th District and faces two challengers, Denis O'Leary and John Zargoza. If no candidate gets 50 percent of the vote in that race, there will be a runoff election in November between the top two vote-getters.
Voters will also be deciding between two candidates for who will be the next Ventura County Superior Court judge.
Registration requirements are simple. You must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Ventura County and at least 18 by the June 3 election. You cannot register if you're in prison or a convicted felon on parole, or have been judged by a court as mentally incompetent to register and vote.
Registration forms are available at the Elections Division in the County Government Center, at city halls, post offices, libraries, chambers of commerce and fire stations. Simply fill out the form and sign it. You must include your California driver's license number or your California state identification number. If you have neither, you must provide the last four digits of your Social Security number.
The completed registration form can be returned to Ventura County Elections Division, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura. If you mail in your registration, it must be postmarked by Monday.
So register now, and vote June 3.
