Kyle Busch wins All-Star race pole

Kyle Busch continued his dominance with a flawless qualifying effort at Concord, N.C., on Friday night to capture the pole for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

Busch, the Sprint Cup points leader with three wins and seven top-10 finishes in 11 races, was the last car to hit the track. In a unique format that called for three laps and a four-tire pit stop, Busch was the fastest in and out of pit road and finished in 2 minutes, 1.956 seconds.

Busch was more than a half-second faster than Jeff Gordon, who will start on the outside of the front row for today's non-points race.

Kurt Busch, Kyle's older brother, qualified third, followed by Martin Truex Jr., Greg Biffle and Jamie McMurray.

Gordon sat on top of the speed chart for more than hour before being overtaken by NASCAR's 23-year-old star. Busch, whose aggressive style has ticked off fans of other drivers, namely Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s throng, was greeted again by boos after his latest conquest.

"I certainly knew that Kyle would be tough to beat," Gordon said. "We felt like he would be faster than us on the track. Of course you know that he's going to be aggressive on pit road. Those were the areas that he beat us."

The qualifying format placed great importance on the pit stop, with drivers penalized for speeding on pit road, loose lug nuts or other mistakes by their crews.

Jimmie Johnson will start from the rear of the field after he stopped outside the pit box. Denny Hamlin will join him in the back after he spun out as he entered pit road.

Earnhardt qualified 11th.

Today's race will feature four 25-lap segments, with a $1 million first prize.

Briscoe, two rookies crash in Indy 500 practice: Veteran driver Ryan Briscoe, a front-row qualifier last week, crashed hard in the second turn but was uninjured during practice for the Indianapolis 500.

One of the fastest on the final full day of practice before the May 25 race, Briscoe spun into the wall with the rear of his backup car. After climbing out on his own, he was checked at the infield hospital and cleared to drive.

The 26-year-old Australian, who drives for Team Penske, qualified his primary race car third last week, placing him on the outside of the front row for the race. At the time of his crash on Friday, his top speed of 223.372 mph was third fastest of the day, behind pole-sitter Scott Dixon and former winner Helio Castroneves, Briscoe's teammate with Penske.

In separate crashes, rookie drivers E.J. Viso and Will Power also hit the wall but were not hurt.

Viso, a 23-year-old Venezuelan, hit the wall first. He had completed only one lap early in the session and was still building speed when he lost control going into the third turn, struck the outside wall with the rear of his car and spun across the track.

Crafton earns Trucks victory: With Kyle Busch's dominant car getting crunched, Matt Crafton survived a wild finish to win his first Craftsman Truck Series race at Concord, N.C.

Neff tops Funny Car field: Rookie Mike Neff topped Funny Car qualifying in the O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristo, Tenn.

Neff, seeking the first No. 1 qualifying position of his career, drove his Ford Mustang to a 4.783-second pass at 321.04 mph to become the provisional top qualifier.
