Westlake Village fetes 3 citizens of the year
The Westlake Village City Council honored three residents Wednesday for their contributions to the community, based on the recommendations of a council committee.
Doris Rufener, a resident for 40 years, was honored as Older American of the Year. She is the "neighbor who is always helping," Councilman Mark Rutherford said.
Rufener has been involved in activities ranging from adopting two cottages of children at the former Camarillo State Hospital to starting a program called Babies in Need in support of young mothers.
The council recognized Andrew Schmidt as Youth of the Year and presented him with a $500 scholarship.
Schmidt, who will attend UC Irvine in the fall, is a senior and honors student at Agoura High School.
He has served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and has assisted at Rotary Club events.
The council honored Neil Ticktin as Citizen of the Year and will donate $500 to the nonprofit of his choice. Ticktin was saluted for his organization of the annual Soap Box Derby and other community activities.
