What career are you cut out for? Are you planning to go to college? Are your grades important? Will you follow your dreams? Those were the questions for Somis School students on Thursday as the Somis School Site Council sponsored Career Day 2008. Small groups of students rotated from speaker to speaker, and jobs were presented in a wide variety of fields.

Former Somis School student and Career Day speaker, Sergeant Frank Underlin, started his career as the Somis School janitor many years ago, and has went on to become the Search and Rescue Coordinator of the Aviation Unit for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. Former Somis School Kindergarten Teacher, Kari Skidmore, recognized many former students and remembered all the fun things they did when she taught at Somis School. She is now the Principal at Santa Clara Elementary School. Somis resident, Keely Brown, gave out medical gloves and auctioned off x-rays to bring attention to the flexible hours and job security in the nursing profession. She is a Registered Nurse at St. Johns Regional Medical Center in the Intensive Care Unit. Somis Firefighters talked about dozens of jobs within the Fire Department that need highly trained and ambitious men and women.

Other speakers included Michael Roehr, Professor of Theatre Arts at California Lutheran University, Crystal Scavone, CPA at Garry Jones & Associates, Ed Maliski, entrepreneur in the biopharmaceutical field and Matthew LaVere, Attorney for Myers, Widders, Gibson, Jones & Schneider.

All the presentations were excellent, and gave Somis School students alot to think about. Thank you to all the speakers at Career Day 2008!
