SANTA CLARITA — Great teams do the little things it often takes to win big games, and that's exactly what host Hart High did during its 5-1 victory over Westlake in Thursday's CIF-Southern Section Division I first-round playoff game.

Hart batters executed two perfect hit- and-run plays that helped the Indians score runs and second baseman Spenser Moniz pulled off a perfect squeeze bunt that scored a key run late in the game.

Conversely, the Warriors (15-14) were unable to do much against Hart pitchers Mike Montgomery and Trevor Bauer, who limited Westlake to four hits.

Westlake coach Zach Miller expressed his disappointment about his team's final performance of the season.

"The disappointment after not winning the game is that we didn't show up to play. We didn't hit, we didn't throw strikes and we didn't play defense. We can't just have one or two guys show up to play and expect to win, especially against a good team like Hart."

Through the first three innings the game was a battle between Westlake ace Graham Johnson and Hart's hard-throwing left-hander Mike Montgomery.

Knowing runs were probably going to be at a premium, Hart coach Jim Ozella opted to play for an early run in the first inning. Moniz led off with a single, then stole second. Tyler Eyrich sacrificed Moniz to third, which allowed him to score when Danny Susdorf hit a long fly to center field.

"We wanted to try and get to him (Johnson) early because we didn't want him to get locked in and just shut us down," Ozella said. "I wanted to be aggressive early in the game, so that's why we played for the run in the first."

Westlake mounted its only serious threat in the top of the fourth inning. Shortstop Shane Kroker led off with a single. Christian Yelich followed with a walk and Derek Ring was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with no outs.

But Josh Gray struck out, so Miller opted to have third baseman Max Winsberg try a squeeze bunt, which he accomplished to perfection, allowing Kroker to come home with the tying run.

But the next Westlake batter struck out, leaving the Warriors with just one run in the inning.

"We did not get hits when we needed them," Miller said. "We had bases loaded and no outs and we only get one run in with a bunt. That's not what we are after."

With the game tied at 1-1, Hart rallied to take the lead. After Trevor Matern walked, Hart executed a perfect hit and run, as Trevor Brown rifled a single through the spot that Kroker had just vacated as he went to cover second base.

With runners on first and third, Jenzen Torres doubled down the right-field line, scoring Matern and leaving runners on second and third. That sent Johnson to the bench, replaced by Alex Gillingham. Hart scored its second run of the inning on a passed ball, but Gillingham got out of the inning without any more damage.

Leading 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Hart tacked on two more runs, which was more than enough for hard- throwing relief pitcher Trevor Bauer, who pitched the final two innings without allowing a Westlake base runner.

"They came out with a purpose," Miller said of Hart. "That was a knockout, because we did not compete."
