Show is dedicated to car crash victim

The Ventura College Dance Department's spring show, "GOLD," is scheduled to open tonight and will honor Danielle Barrett of Fillmore, who was in the cast until her death in a car accident last week. The cast will dedicate the already scheduled performances to her memory.

The show celebrates award-winning music, cinema and stage performances.

Through dance and song the audience will relive the work of Grammy, Academy Award and Tony recipients. "GOLD" will feature such styles as ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, ballroom and tap. For music enthusiasts, there will be live performances from some of the county's best vocal artists.

Performances will be in the main theater at Ventura College at 8 tonight , 8 p.m. Saturday, 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday.

This original dance production is the artistic creation of the students in Dance 30, a course offered at Ventura College to give students experience in choreography and performance. The show is directed by Becky Contreras, in conjunction with assistant director Darshana Chima.

Dance numbers will include performances to well-known music from such movies and musicals as "Gone with the Wind," "Doctor Zhivago," "Chariots of Fire," "Casablanca," "Love Story," "Zorba the Greek," "An American in Paris," "Chicago," "The Godfather," "Titanic," "Wicked," "Grease," "Guys and Dolls," "Dream Girls," "Lion King," "Schindler's List," "The Wiz," "Movin' Out" and "Hairspray."

Music will include pieces from "Fiddler on the Roof," "West Side Story," "Sound of Music," "Man of La Mancha" and more.

Tickets will be $10 at the door. Pre-sale tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for students, seniors and faculty members. For more information, or to order tickets, call Contreras at 207-5877.

Center to hold Chumash Pow Wow

The Chumash Interpretive Center will hold a Chumash Pow Wow from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at 3290 Lang Ranch Parkway, Thousand Oaks.

The event will feature Native American drummers and dancers as well as arts and crafts. The museum will also be open.

Admission is $3 for those 16 and older; children are free.

Art show to feature students' work

St. Paul's School Student Art Show will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at 3290 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.

The school will showcase artwork created by students in first through eighth grades.

The school's cookbooks will be on sale as will barbecued food and hot sauces.

Street fair to benefit school department

The Newbury Park High School Panther Band will sponsor its second annual street fair from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the high school campus, 456 Reino Road.

The event will feature a farmers market, Kid Zone Carnival, rummage sale, street vendors, arts and crafts booths, live music and a swamp meet.

The event benefits the Newbury Park High School Instrumental Music Department, which is under the direction of Dennis Crystal. The bazaar is produced by the Panther Band Boosters.

Free family movie night offered

The Camarillo United Methodist Church will offer a free family movie night, featuring "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium," at 6:30 p.m. in Brooks Hall, 291 Anacapa Drive, Camarillo.

The evening includes hot dogs, popcorn and fruit drinks.

Families with children of all ages are invited. Kids can come in their pajamas and bring blankets and pillows.

In the 2007 movie, Mr. Magorium (Dustin Hoffman) discovers his health is failing at 243 years. He turns the running of this most amazing toy store over to a depressed manager, and then the toys come to life. The movie is G-rated.

Artisan Craft Faire set at Leonis Adobe

Leonis Adobe Museum will present the Artisan Craft Faire from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the museum grounds at 23537 Calabasas Road, Calabasas.

There will be demonstrations by woodcarvers, leather worker, jewelry maker, spinners, plein-aire painters and Native American gourd painter.

Theater to present 'Fractured Fables'

Theater 150 will present "Fractured Fables" featuring six actors, 64 characters in 65 minutes at 1 p.m. Saturdays, beginning this Saturday through June 7 at 316 E. Matilija St., Ojai.

"Fractured Fables" is an interactive, fast-paced romp through folk tales from the Orient and beyond.

Electronics recycling event planned

West Simi Lock-Up Self Storage, 445 E. Easy St., Simi Valley, will have an electronics recycling event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..

All electronics from residents will be accepted at no charge, although any other hazardous waste materials — such as paint — or bulky items will not be accepted. Examples of what will be accepted are TVs and monitors, computers, cell phones, printers and stereos.

Organ Concert Series to present event

First Presbyterian Church of Oxnard and the Ventura chapter of the American Guild of Organists invites the public to their Organ Concert Series featuring Namhee Han, who will perform pipe organ music. The concert will be at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Oxnard, 850 Ivywood Drive.

The program will include works of J.S. Bach, Franck, Thalben-Ball, Vierne and Messiaen.

Barbecue chicken dinner set in Fillmore

The Fillmore Fire Department in conjunction with Grad Nite Live of Fillmore will host a barbecue chicken dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fillmore Fire Station 91, 711 Sespe Place. Drive-through as well as seated service in the fire station will be available.

A $10 donation per dinner is requested. Dinner will include chicken, barbecued by the firefighters, chili beans, salad and a dinner roll.

All proceeds benefit the Grad Nite Live organization. The fund-raising event is one of several planned by organizers of Grad Nite Live to generate the approximately $23,000 required annually to support the youth program. Grad Nite Live was established to keep graduating seniors of Fillmore High School off the roads after graduation and in a safe, alcohol- and drug-free environment following their commencement.

Botanic garden to hold annual festival

The Conejo Valley Botanic Garden will hold its annual Matilija Poppy Festival in the nursery area from 1 to 5 p.m.

Visitors can see the "fried egg" flower, hear speakers on gardening topics, take part in special tours and children's activities and buy native and water-wise plants.

Enter at West Gainsborough Road at Jeaunine Drive, between Lynn and Moorpark roads, in Thousand Oaks. Across from the parking area is the Kids' Adventure Garden. Walk south on the path, following the signs to the garden's main entrance. Follow signs and flags to the nursery area.
