2 jailed in hit-and-run that killed 2-year-old

Two men accused of a hit-and-run accident that killed a 2-year-old Santa Paula boy sitting in a wagon were being held today in Ventura County Jail, authorities said.

Robert Villanueva, 25, of Santa Paula was driving a pickup truck on West Main Street about 2:12 p.m. Wednesday when it jumped a curb near Glen City School in Santa Paula and struck a wagon in which Charles Goodrich, 2, was being pulled by his mother, police said.

Witnesses told police they heard tires screeching and saw a pickup truck strike the wagon with great force. They then saw the driver make a 360-degree turn on Main Street and speed away.

The boy was pronounced dead at Santa Paula Hospital. No other serious injuries were reported.

A Santa Paula motorcycle officer spotted the truck on Hobbs Circle, about a half-mile from the school, shortly after the collision. Villanueva was detained Wednesday and booked into County Jail this morning on suspicion of felony leaving the scene of an accident, felony manslaughter with gross negligence, and a parole violation. He is not eligible for bail.

Villanueva has been convicted of felony possession of a controlled substance twice in Ventura County, according to court records.

The passenger and owner of the pickup, Albert Garcia, 31, of Santa Paula, was booked into jail Wednesday on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, police said. He was being held in custody this morning in lieu of $750,000 bail.

A woman, whom police did not identify today, was also in the pickup when the crash occurred. She had not been arrested as of this morning.

Investigators were trying today to determine exactly what caused the pickup to jump a curb and hit the wagon, police Sgt. Ismael Cordero said.

Students at Glen City School had gone home by the time the crash occurred, but about 50 were playing on a nearby field when Charles was hit. Principal Rick Cadman said psychologists are on hand at the school today to talk to students about the tragedy.

Charles was the fourth of five children of Kathleen and Glen Goodrich of Santa Paula, said Father Charles Lueras of St. Sebastian Church in Santa Paula. Kathleen is an organist and choir member at the church, where she has been a parishioner for more than a decade.

Lueras, who baptized Charles, said the boy "was a wonderful baby." He was also the Goodriches' only son.

Kathleen was walking home from a grocery store, pulling Charles in the wagon and carrying her youngest daughter in an infant front pack, when the pickup hit the boy, said a family friend and fellow church member.

When Lueras visited Kathleen at Santa Paula Hospital on Wednesday to offer prayers and support, she was standing barefoot with blood on her feet, staring down at the floor, he said. Kathleen attended Mass this morning at St. Sebastian, he said.

"She's a wonderful person and a dedicated mother," Lueras said as he headed to the family's home to deliver a $500 check from the church. "Everyone is shocked by what happened."

It's pretty crappy when you realize that we're in a time that you cant even go for a walk with your little ones in tow in a wagon. I know, it could have happened anywhere, or at anytime, this is just heartbreaking. My condolences to the mother and family.

this happened so close to my home and to think these low-lifes thought only of their own skins to run and leave that mother to deal with her tragedy... I'm furious at them!! I want their chicken$--- faces posted!! And my heart breaks for the loss of this precious little one and his family... who knows what his future would have meant to all of us. I've giving my 4 grandbabies extra hugs when I get home...

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Two heartless parolees killed a young child and ran away like cowards that is disgusting.

actually, "tiredofviolence" -- statistically -- we're in the most peaceful time in human history. its the overflow of media that makes you think otherwise

either way its a tragic accident and im sure the driver had no intention of harm. if you wish anything bad on either party i dont know what to say...

burn burn burn lowlife scum!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by whatever on May 15, 2008 at 11:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I want the reason that they left to be put in the media. The real truth and not a cover-up by the media. NO ONE leaves the scene just to be doing, they have a reason, but if I post my theories the good ole red Star will pull the comment because they don't like the truth. I can only imagine how this mother is feeling.

Posted by Ms_California on May 15, 2008 at 11:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well one reason for them leaving the scene would be that they were on parole and the second is that they are cowards! They killed a baby and left his family devistated... Maybe I need to rearrange the order of my theories here.

Posted by dgreene on May 15, 2008 at 12:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well, one is on parole, but both of them have priors for under the influence of a controlled substance, and one has a prior for drunk driving so that could of also contributed. I just hope the DA throws the book at them, we don't need people like this. My most sincere condolensces to the family. I can't imagine how hard it must be for a loss that great. Charles, Rest In Peace.

I am just a little baby
And I didn't linger there;
I went straight to be with Jesus
And I'm waiting for you here.

Many dwelling here where I live
Waited years to enter in;
Struggled through a world of sorrow
And their lives were marred with sin.

So, dear parents, don't you sorrow,
I'm not held in death's cold tomb.
I have gone to be with Jesus
Wipe those tears and chase the gloom.

Thank you for the life you gave me,
It was brief, but don't complain,
I have all of heaven's glory:
Suffered none of earthling's pain.

Thank you for the name you gave me,
I'd have liked to brought it fame
Had I lingered in earth's shadows
Might instead have brought it shame.

"tho you miss me please remember
I'm of all God's lambs most blest;
I'd have loved to stay there with you
But our shepherd knows what's best.

stiXnwHEEEEELS - are you frigging kidding me with this liberal bs nonsense you are spewing?!
these losers (at least the driver) need to be beaten to death slowly.
these cowardly punks did not even have the balls to see if the child was ok. perhaps this childs life could have been saved if they actually called 911 or tried to help the child themselves.
I pity the person who does this to my child. there is not a prison in this world I would be worried about spending life in, if this were to happen to my child.

I'm so sorry to the Goodrich family. May these two losers rot in jail, getting it in the backside, by Bubba and his friends. These losers don't deserve to breath! What kind of garbage would do this, and a woman in the car..she too should be jailed, she didn't come forward or call the police. May you all rot in jail for taking the life of an innocent child.

First of all, I want to express my deepest condolences to the family of this sweet little boy. May he rest in peace.

guscan=Beautiful poem.

cordames=Thanks for the link. I just looked at it and these scumballs look like real winners.

Hope they rot in prison, along with all the others in the vehicle. I agree, with the post that said, the other passengers in the vehicle are just as bad as the driver. They never went to the authorities or tried to help in any way. They are all scum!!!!! No excuses for this, cowards!!!!!

Posted by george1234 on May 15, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

THE PHOTOS OF THE SUSPECTS ARE POSTED ON THE KCAL NEWS WEBSITE. This is what happens when the people of this state say "Oh, they are just drug offenders, they wont hurt anyone but themselves." Stand by people, the state is releasing 38,000 felons from prison this summer due to overcrowding. The Governor's Office is doing a great job at keeping this quiet. Out of that number, 1700 are expected to be released in Ventura County. HOW MANY MORE KIDS HAVE TO DIE DUE TO POLITICS. Had this scum bag been locked up like he is suppose to be, instead of being release early, maybe baby Goodrich would still be alive. It's time you let the Governor's Office know you're not happy with his BS!!!

George1234- I believe that the releasing of the 22,000 inmates has been thrown out the window. GO read the sacbee newspaper online. There's something about it. I might be wrong though.
As far as this horrific incident, I am praying for the family. I can't imagine what they are going through. How horrible that there are people out there with criminal records continuing to victimize people. I hope the justice system takes care of these two.

Posted by Comments on May 15, 2008 at 6:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

FedUp - you always seem to want to target liberals and have a great way of placing people whose beliefs you don't agree with into groups called "liberals," and said with much disdain. I am a liberal - very liberal. However, like you there is no prison on earth that would prevent me from doing what you said you'd do. Hopefully I'll never, ever (nor will you) have to find out if we're as strong as we think we are. All I know is that no one had better ever hurt my little guy. And, I also know that my heart absolutely aches for the family of this poor baby and I can't help but thinking of his poor mama having to witness what she did. I do not have one ounce of sympathy for the scum who killed this child. I will never have an ounce of sympathy for them - no matter what excuses their attorneys conjure up. There is no excuse for what they did. Yes, sadly tragic accidents happen. This was not an accident and there is never an excuse for leaving the scene of an accident, especially when you know you've hit someone. May they rot. And, if the female passenger was the one who reported them and is cooperating then maybe it's ok she wasn't arrested too. However, if she was hiding them or covering for them, or if she stayed silent and didn't call 911 herself, then may she too face a lifetime of evil herself. So, am I still a liberal in your eyes? I am still a liberal. Circumstances like this garner very similar feelings no matter what your political bent may be. So please stop trying to use every single opportunity you can to try and make this an us vs. them (conservative vs liberal) case just because people don't seem to agree with you, or because they may have more heart and soul then you could ever hope for.

My condolences to the family of Charles...
This is great Star reporting;
quote" They then saw the driver make a 360-degree turn on Main Street and speed away.' end quote.
A 360 degree turn is a full circle. So when they were leaving, they did a full circle on main Street?

Posted by AnnaWhaat on May 15, 2008 at 7:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If this was an accident..........and I am not commenting again on it as I have said many many times. People come here and wish BUBBA gets a hold of them or they drop the soap (whatever). Just remember you are creating a rapist in prison that may get out on parole and have that urge to do as you wish upon them...........
My prayers are with the family and loved ones of this little child. And I loved the poem up above it was very touching.

Posted by onapproach on May 15, 2008 at 8:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why would he do a 360° turn before leaving the scene?

Posted by NightLight on May 15, 2008 at 8:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My prayers are with the family, I cannot imagine what they are going through, especially the mother who not only had everything happen right in front of her but who was holding the wagon when it was hit.

I hope they find comfort in the love and support of friends, family, and strangers...and comfort in knowing their baby is safe in Heaven.

i'm glad that they got caught, and i certainly hope that they get the max. but....there is definitely something missing here. i know quite a bit about the law and how it works (or doesn't sometimes, but that's an entirely different rant). i get how the driver is arrested for hit and run, etc, but i'm missing how the OWNER of the vehicle is arrested for the same type of charges- felony hit & run and vehicular manslaughter. he was the passenger and not in control of the vehicle. perhaps it's a conspiracy/concealment issue, but there is definitely something we're not being told.

Posted by patticakepatti on May 16, 2008 at 5:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The driver has already spent time in prison, that is why he is on parole. With any luck, when he goes back to prison (and he will), he's issued a very slippery bar of soap!

I don't care if he left because he was scared, he had a responsibility and he chose to run, plain and simple.

And AnnaWhaat, nobody creates a rapist....puuuuuuuuuuuuuuhlease! The issue here is not whether or not it was an accident...of course it was an accident, a very horrible one. The issue here is the fact that the scum ran like a little sissy and the fact that this scum is on parole. Because he is on parole, he will get more time; however, no amount of time will ever make up for what he did. And yes, may he rot in he!! and be issued the slipperiest bar of soap there is and not only that, I hope is roommate has been there for a very long time and is very lonely!

Posted by patticakepatti on May 16, 2008 at 5:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

not at all smithjc...He is the registered owner of the vehicle and as such, he has responsibilities for numerous things....remember this folks, if you are the registered owner of a vehicle, you are responsible for whomever is driving it. Not only that, he was a passenger and didn't report it. What part of his arrest don't you understand???

When you hand someone the keys to a vehicle that is registered to you, you are basically handing over as weapon....look at it this way and perhaps you will think twice before loaning your car out.

Another example.....you leave your keys laying out, your son/daughter takes the keys (and the car), does not have a license and gets caught. Your car is going bye bye for 30 days (and guess who is repsponsible for paying the storage fees???) and you are going to have more fees than you know what to do with. It doesn't matter that you "didnt' know" they took the car. The bottom line here is if you own a registered vehicle, you are responsible for any and all who drive it (to a degree).

My heart just broke when I read this story. I am so thankful the suspects have been arrested and hopefully will not be allowed back on the streets to repeat offend.

Why don't the friends and families of those three responsible for this child's death hold a car wash or do something to raise some money for the family that lost their son? When a gang member is killed the friends and family are quick to raise money to help.This is an innocent child and innocent family. Do something.

Posted by AnnaWhaat on May 18, 2008 at 7:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

patticakepatti Well when and IF he does ever get out of prison I hope he doesn't walk past your son or grandchild on his way home and get that URGE he felt so great in prison !!!!!!!!!!!! Basically you want everyone in prison to turn into rapist. RIght?
Also its a FACT that most people including women go into prison STRAIGHT then come out GAY !!!!!! SO yes prison does change people. You don't have to be born that way. Which is crap anyhow.AND you are not responsible for your car if your child stole it. And you were responsible putting your keys away.......if you thought this may happen.
