Man shot, killed near apartments; no suspects ID'd
Killing isolated gang incident, authorities say
A fatal shooting Tuesday night in Oxnard appeared to be an isolated incident of gang-related violence, police said Wednesday.
Oxnard police said they responded about 10:50 p.m. Tuesday to a report of people arguing and shots fired in the 2700 block of El Dorado Avenue and found Cristobal Flores, 21, of Oxnard lying in the courtyard of an apartment complex.
Flores had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:58 p.m., said Chief Deputy James Baroni of the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.
Police believe Flores had gang ties, but his killing does not appear to be related to other crimes, police Sgt. Jim Seitz said. Police, however, had not identified any suspects in the killing as of Wednesday.
"This appears to be an isolated incident and not a result of any previous incidents," Seitz wrote. "Overall, this has been a very quiet year regarding gang crimes."
Oxnard has seen a downturn in crime in recent years. In 2007, no gang-related homicides were reported in the city, Police Chief John Crombach said in January.
Tuesday's shooting took place in a courtyard between two apartment complexes, police said. The killer or killers left in a car.
The victim did not live on El Dorado, a wide residential street near Channel Islands Boulevard. He was in the area with a friend Tuesday night, Seitz said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to contact Detective Mike Young at 385-7606 or leave a message on the violent crimes hotline at 982-7070. Callers to the hotline can remain anonymous.
It was the third homicide reported in Oxnard this year. One other death in the city is being investigated as a possible homicide. In 2007, 10 slayings were reported in Oxnard.

you know this whole article sounds funny to me. So many people said in posts yesterday that this was a good man, who loves his twins, was job seeking.. etc... answer me this, if he is such a good person and loved his kids, why was he not with them at 11:00 at night? He wasn't even in his neighborhood. Obviously this was someone who had their priorities out of line. Let's face it normal parents are at home with their children at that time of night.
Luckily no one else was injured or killed during all of this. Probably because they were all in their houses with their families!

He was with his girlfriend if you here the news she lived right near their and his kids where probably asleep by 11 since they are only 1 year old. Why do people have to be so negative and try and to find a reason why he is not a good father and why was he out late.. the store is only down the street maybe him and his girlfriend where walking to the store no one knows what really happened except the people who where their so please quit assuming this and that. Why can't u just pray for him and the family...

My condolences to the family.
"Oxnard has seen a downturn in crime in recent years. In 2007, no gang-related homicides were reported in the city, Police Chief John Crombach said in January."
Does that mean that there have been no gang homicides because they were not called 'gang homicides'?....
Could this be a case of 'If a tree falls in the forest.....'???

Oh please cindoh23, nothing good comes about at that late at night. I'm sorry this to me based on the information that has been in the news does not sound like he was innocently walking to the store as you say and just happened to be shot and killed. Besides, what possibly could you need at the store that late at night anyway that wouldn't wait until morning to get? He and his girlfriend should have been home with those children thanking god for them both. he should have been more responsible and cleaned up his act for them and them alone. I have no tolerance for people who have children and then have no regard for them. God forbid if they just had happened to have been with him at the time of the shooting.
This was a long time coming I am sure. If you are in a gang,it is only a matter of time before you kill someone or are killed yourself. Stop protecting these useless pieces of life and start promoting antigang violence. If these people are off the streets maybe Oxnard wouldn't be such a bad place to live. At one time it used to be very pretty. I don't dare even drive through Oxnard now and I grew up there!

Beside the point of where he was and at what time it was, that gives no one the right to give accusations as to what kind of father he was. What does matter is that he has a mother, father, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews and two little boys that love and miss him very much. It doesn't matter the circumstances on why he died whether it be gang related or not... a person who was loved very much has died and can never be brought back so people should be careful on what comments they make. You never know if the next family could be your own. I pray for the Flores family daily that God's peace may dwell within you and that He will give you all the strength to get through this.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble~ Psalm 46:1

Regardless of if Chris was a gang member or was out late at night, he was undoubtedly God's son. And did not deserve to be gunned downed in the street like a dog. Of course there are gang problems in Oxnard and yes, there needs to be a resolutions but his life is no less as valuable than yours or mine.
Ms_California you use God's name in your blog but you obviously don't not know Him because a person of Christ would never speak of another as "a useless piece of life."
I will continue to pray for Chris' soul, his children, and his family. I'll even pray for you Ms_California because you need it.

Gang violence can happen at any time of day. Look at the shootings in El Rio last month (Sunday afternoon). But if you are home with your family, kids, or loved ones your odds of getting shot tend to decrease.
If you do bad things, bad things will happen to you.

Oh I am sure, and a person of Christ would never be in a gang either, or kill another person.. please, people can say they are a "person of Christ" but when it comes to the way they live their lives they do what they may. And by the way, I used the word "GOD" in my blog as a figure of speech just as everyone uses "gang related" as a figure of speech. This article or posts have nothing to do with religion.

Mommi_b, I agree with you. I am a very close friend of the family and know what they are going through. It doesn't matter what Chris was. He was someone's son who is now mourning for him & wishes he was still here. The only ones to pray for now are his family members who are still here on this earth and need our prayer.

Live by the gun, die by the gun. For all we know, this guy instigated something and we could have been reading that the other person got killed. If you don't want to get dirty, don't roll in the mud. condolences to his kids and his family, they have no fault in this.

for the people who will say, 'oh, what if it was your family.' Trust me, it could be my family. There are a lot of gang members in my family, I love them very much, but the choices they make are their own. Also, just because you grew up around gangs doesn't mean you have to be in one, I'm not a gang member. I grew up on the Southside of Oxnard, I think that the whole 'product of environment' is all BS.

My condolences to his family and friends. It is sad that he leaves behind two small boys who will never know their dad.
However, I disagree with the statement "It doesn't matter what Chris was." It kind of does matter if he had gang ties. Think about it; if he was not involved with gangs and was just an ordinary guy the chances are he'd still be here today.
That's what is so frustrating and tragic about gangs...death seems to be the only way out. Why do people choose to live that way? I just don't get it.
I'm sure Chris did love his boys, his girlfriend, family, and friends. But sometimes you don't get a do-over.
Again, my condolences to those who are hurting.

GANG RELATED AND AN ISOLATED INCIDENT??? IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE A CONTRADICTION OF TERMS HERE, EITHER THAT, OR LYING RUNS IN THE FAMILY.
OXNARD CAN EXPECT MANY MORE OF THESE "ISOLATED INCIDENTS" BECAUSE THEY ARE GANG RELATED. IT'S NOT A WHOLE LOT DIFFERENT THAN SAYING SOMEONE USED HEROIN IN AN "ISOLATED INCIDENT", IT'S JUST NOT GOING TO HAPPEN THAT WAY. GANGS ARE QUICKLY BECOMING THE CLOSE FAMILY TIES AND SUPPORT (MISGUIDED THOUGH IT MAY BE)THAT MANY OF OUR YOUTH HAS BEEN LACKING.
LOS ANGELES GANGS ARE MOVING NORTH TO GET OUT OF LAPD'S REACH AND IT IS UP TO US AS CITIZENS TO MAKE SURE THAT IT MOVES RIGHT ON PAST OUR CITIES UNLESS YOU WANT OXNARD TO MOVE UP THE LADDER OF HOMICIDE STATS.
I PERSONALLY SEE OXNARD AS A TRAIN WRECK. IT USED TO BE A NICE AREA, NOW, I GET A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN I GET TOO FAR WEST OF THE ESPLANADE...

AnnaWhaat...please...he put himself smack dab in the middle of the 'evil world.'
None of this should ever happen but it will continue to happen because these gang-bangers think that this is the best life has to offer.
I am sure that his family is devastated. But why is it that whenever someone with gang ties is killed, presumably by gang-members, those left behind talk about what a great guy he was, how he loved his family, etc. etc.?
If any of these guys were "such great guys" they'd stop with the gang BS, raise their kids, live a lawbiding life, and make a positive contribution to society.
What kind of life was he making for his twins by having gang ties? You can't have it both ways.

Its really sad this happened. I just really hope his little brother straightens up his act really soon and turns his life around so he doesnt become the next victim.

You can dispute the kind of person he was til the cows come home and the fat lady sings, fact of the matter is that he had gang ties. Police don't just assume each person murdered is gang related, there is evidence that they are... maybe he was known by the OPD as an active gang member. Case in point is that he was out when he should have been home with those babies and it was no way of life for those boys to be brought up in. It isn't uncommon for innocent children of gang members to be killed by stray bullets intended for their fathers. I am sorry their daddy was killed but it may be a action of fate,in that they are no longer in harms way of gangs, unless their mother keeps her ties which I hope she is smart enough to break and leave far behind!

Why don't you ask some of his gang homeis to help in catching the person who pulled the trigger... they seem to know Chris and may possibly know of a motive for his death.

Why is it that so many people feel it is so unusual to be out past sundown...whether it is 9pm, 10pm, or 11pm? My wife and I take evening walks all the time. This is still a free country. And, people are allowed to be outside a night.
I remember when our daughter was 1 year old. Sometimes you need to get out of the house, at least for awhile, to decompress. Her older sister was in the house to keep an eye on her, as well as her grandmother.
Maybe this guy had a baby-sitter? Maybe this guy had a relative watching over his twins?
We don't know...do we?

A young man died because of his stupidity and apparent inability to run away from those who would do him harm.
I agree with juniormafia's "product of your environment." There comes a point in everyone's life when you know the difference between right and wrong. Those who choose wrong use "product of environment" as their excuse, and they continue to live a life of excuses.
Very few people deserve to be die. I do not think Flores deserved to die, but he chose the life he wanted to live (and died for).
We need to bring his killer(s) to justice, but do not blame his killer(s) for taking a son and father away from his family. The sole responsiblity in this particular case, rest squarely on Flores shoulders.

mommi_b - Who or what gave you the right to pass judgement on someone and their use of God? Your a typical "judge everyone" because your beyond Holy. Do us all a favor, we didn't ask for your prayer, so keep it to yourself. I think your relationship with God should stay personal. That's the way I keep it, so should you. The bottom line is that this person was probably involved in gang activity, either in the past or recent past. It's very unfortunate that he may have been turning his life around and this happened. Very sad. But, I will say this. People make their choices in life, he made his, as sad as it is he paid the ultimate price for surrounding himself around a horrible environment. People are so quick to feel sorry and want to recognize this person after he was killed, but where were all of you when he was alive, did you support him then, did you help him turn his life around? I'm thinking turning a blind eye to the situation was more then likely. Keep your kids educated, in sports, and raise them right.

Chris was a bright young man, who always had a smile on his face.
Unfortunately he chose the wrong crowd to socialize with and made his share of poor decisions in the latter part of his short life. He was not a bad student or person, he just made some bad decisions. Ultimately his final bad decision to be out late with some buddies on a Tuesday night was met with tragedy. Prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends.

Respect for him?? Do you respect terrorists? See, gang members are street terrorists. They rob and beat citizens for their money, they rob and steal from local stores, they break into homes and car, they sell drugs and guns and kill others and they instill fear in all the citizens in their neighborhood all for the recognition of their gang. I do not respect anyone who takes on a life of crime and gang involvement nor do I respect anyone who has no respect for their family who will inevitably suffer the burden of grief when they meet their demise. I will not respect anyone like this when they are alive and I will certainly not respect them just because they were killed "representing their hood"

It's a reality check that this is one major consequence of being a gang member. My uncle looks back and thanks God he made a smart move.

Some questions...he was out after 11pm, away from his children, because he went somewhere else to visit his girlfried? How does that make him a good father? If the babies were a year old, what has he done in that time to make him a good father? He might have been a nice guy but he chose his life style. It was his choice. You can call him alot of things but I don't think he earned the title of "good father" yet. That is a slap in the face to all the men who put in years of raising a child and making scarifices. Putting the needs of their children before their own desires. Don't throw the term "good father" in with this sad story.

Oxnard has seen a downturn in crime in recent years. In 2007, no gang-related homicides were reported in the city, Police Chief John Crombach said in January.
ANYONE THAT LIVES IN VENTURA COUNTY LET ALONE OXNARD KNOWS THIS STATEMENT IS A BUNCH OF BULL.
AND YES LET THE MAN REST. VERY DISRESPECTFUL TO SPEAK BAD ABOUT THE DEAD, REGARDLESS OF WHAT KIND OF PERSON THEY WERE. WHY THEY WERE OUT AT 10:00 PM. HE WAS WITH A FRIEND GOT INTO IT WITH SOMEONE OF SOME PEOPLE (BY THE WAY IF THE BULLETS WERE FROM DIFFERENT GUNS THEY CAN TELL) AND GOT KILLED. END OF HIS LIFE END OF THE STORY. THE REAL VICTUMS ARE THE TWINS. NO ONE WILL SPEAK BAD ABOUT THEM RIGHT BECAUSE THEY DONT KNOW THEM SO LET IT BE

Ummm...his children live with his girlfriend, not with him; the twins were asleep at his girlfriend's when the shooting ocurred.

I have no respect nor concern for a person who is in a gang. I feel badly for the people who love them that their loved one doesn't have enough respect for his own life or that of others to live a gang lifestyle. If you choose to be a gangbanger, how is it tragic that you died in a gang-related event? You put yourself in those circumstances. You reap what you sow. Suck it up.
