Are you looking for shade? On a hot day, shade is gold. When the shade is free and beautiful, that's even better.
Some new trees were planted at Lincoln Park on April 23 by members of the Busy Hands Garden Club. The ladies of the club had worked hard selling plants to raise the $500 they donated to Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District to purchase trees.
Club Vice President, Barbara Hard, who was filling in for President, Barbara Still, said, "We raise money every year at our annual plant sale to make a donation to the park district in honor of Arbor Day. Our club has 51 members and it's a pleasure to be able to give to the community."
Group members planted six Quercus rubra, commonly known as Red oak. The fast-growing trees were planted near the play area to provide shade for children playing on the climbing equipment, and for parents sitting on nearby benches.
The trees can reach 90 feet with a broad canopy formed by strong, straight branches. The leaves are green, but become scarlet and red brown in the fall.
Lincoln Park is located at 1215 First Street in Simi Valley. Stop by some time and enjoy the new shade. Well, actually, the trees don't offer much shade yet, but they will, soon.
