2-year-old killed in hit-and-run crash
Truck strikes boy as mother pulls him in wagon
A 2-year-old boy was killed Wednesday afternoon next to a Santa Paula elementary school after a pickup truck jumped the curb, crashed into the wagon the child was riding in and then sped away, police said.
The Ventura County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office identified the victim as Charles Goodrich of Santa Paula.
The boy's mother was carrying an infant and pulling the little, red wagon along a sidewalk on West Main Street on the northeast side of Glen City School, said Joey De Los Reyes, a sergeant with the Santa Paula Police Department. Witnesses reported to police at 2:12 p.m. that they saw a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck veer onto the sidewalk just east of Steckel Drive, hitting the wagon with great force, police said.
Police do not know why the pickup went up on the sidewalk. Witnesses at the school told police they heard tires screeching before the crash and saw the driver make a 360-degree turn in the middle of Main Street before peeling out.
The empty wagon in which Charles was riding rested against a chain-link fence, its left front wheel bent inward. Skid marks could be seen on the sidewalk.
Rick Cadman, the school's principal, said he learned of the wreck after a worker at the school told him a child had been seriously hurt near the entrance to the campus.
Cadman, who served as a hospital administrator in the Army, immediately began trying to resuscitate the little boy.
"He looked really bad," said Cadman, who gave Charles CPR until paramedics arrived.
Paramedics continued to work on the boy on the way to the hospital, said Fire Chief Rick Araiza, but he was pronounced dead at Santa Paula Hospital, according to the Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office.
The mother and the younger child escaped injury.
Police immediately sent out an alert with the truck's description.
A short while later, Dan Potter, a motorcycle officer with the Santa Paula Police Department, spotted a truck matching that description in a residential section of town on Hobbs Circle, about half a mile from the school, De Los Reyes said. Police took two people into custody, although they had yet to arrest anyone in connection with the crash as of late Wednesday afternoon.
Police were still trying to determine if the two people were involved, De Los Reyes said.
They also impounded a truck matching the description of the suspect vehicle that showed damage consistent with a traffic collision, according to Senior Officer Ken Clark.
The crash came after most students had already gone home. Still, some 50 students were playing on a nearby school field when the boy was hit. Teachers and administrators from other schools were also on campus for training, Cadman said.
One teacher, who was in a nearby building at the time and asked that his name not be used, said the truck's tires screeched so loudly he immediately ran to a window to see what was happening.
Cadman said the school contacted parents through an automatic messaging system to let them know of the crash and that the victim was not a student at the school.

MMshoot, exactly...what a coward, killing an innocent child and running? Holy cow! I hope this loser enjoys his new boyfriends in jail. Prisoners are disgusted with child killers, and they deserve all they get!

WOW, is there any lower form of a human being than these garbage scum? Hit run and kill a 2 year old and then flees.........I do NOT want to hear one single person say something like ...." Oh these are such nice boys I can't believe they did it....."
Throw the book at them and make sure we destroy their lives as they have for the family of the 2 year old.
