YMCA Dolphin Swim Team Hosts Aquathon at Ventura Family YMCA
STORY TOOLS
More from Ventura
Each season, the YMCA Dolphin Swim Team participates in a team fundraiser to help purchase small equipment for their swim team. In the past they have held the Pumpkin Push Swim Meet, a 24 hour swim, covering 100 miles in one day and a beach run-swim-run. This season they have decided to take on a much larger project and host an aquathon on Sunday, June 1st, 2008. The race begins at 8:00 am with the goal of raising enough money to purchase a much needed swim meet electronic starter as well as an additional pace clock for the pool deck.
An aquathon is a two sport event which includes a swim and a run. The swim will take place in the indoor pool at the Ventura Family YMCA, while the run will be on a flat course that will meander through some of the local neighborhoods. The event is open to all members of the community ages five and up.
There are different age distances and categories which makes it perfect for anyone trying their first event. Youth, ages 5-11, will swim a 200 yard freestyle and a 1K run. Teens, 12-17 years old, will participate in a 400 yard swim and 3K run, while the Adults, ages 18-39, and Masters, ages 40+, will compete in a 500 yard swim and 5K. Participants also have the option of relay, where one person does the swim while another does the run. Fun relay categories include: Family, Friends, Co-Workers and Teammates. All participants will receive a t-shirt and medals will be awarded for the top 3 finishers, both male and female, in all age groups. For relays, a top finisher will also be awarded in each category.
Fees: (includes T-shirt, post race refreshments, & one week YMCA membership)
Individual: $25 Relay: $45 (Add $10 after May 20th 2008)
Registration for the aquathon can be done online at www.active.com, through a swim team member or in person at the Ventura Family YMCA, located at 3760 Telegraph Rd. in Ventura. Registrations received before May 24th will receive a $10 discount. There will be a pre-race meeting on Friday, May 30th at 6:00 PM at the Ventura Family YMCA.
Each season the Dolphins Swim Team has 50 boys and girls who participate in the YMCA swim team program. Throughout the 12 week session, participants improve on strokes, endurance, make new friends, travel to other YMCAs to participate in swim meets, learn about the YMCAs Six Pillars of Character: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness, Trustworthiness and Citizenship and of course, have fun!
