Tug of war expected to decide awards in Corporate Games
The 2008 Corporate Games organized by the city of Ventura have reached their final week as battles heat up in divisions C and D, where teams from the county's smaller employers are competing.
In Division D, for employers with 10 to 50 workers, just one point separates division leader Las Posas Children's Center of Camarillo from second-place Jano Graphics of Ventura. Trailing Jano by two points is Camarillo-based environmental and energy services company ENSR.
In Division C, for companies and organizations with 51 to 150 employees, Advanced Motion Controls of Camarillo jumped from fifth place to take a five-point lead over last week's leader Imation, a Camarillo data products manufacturer, which is tied for second with Valex, a Ventura-based manufacturer and distributor.
Employees from more than 70 companies and organizations have been taking part in the 18th annual competition.
Since the six-week challenge began April 9, the teams have competed in activities including tennis, beach volleyball, basketball, flag football, darts and surfing.
They will compete in dominos, spades, dodgeball and golf this week before the Corporate Games wrap up Saturday with a final awards ceremony.
In Division D, Las Posas leapfrogged from third place last week to the top of the division with wins in coed softball and kickball.
In Division C, Advanced Motion Controls took the lead with wins in kickball and bowling.
Patagonia maintained its position at the top of Division B, having led the competition from the first week.
With 107 points, the Ventura company's employees increased their lead to 42 points over nearest rival, Sage Publications of Thousand Oaks. Teledyne Scientific and Imaging in Thousand Oaks and Zebra Technologies in Camarillo are tied for third place.
Patagonia took first place in kickball, Frisbee golf and coed softball and came in third in bowling to add to its lead. Division B is for employers with 151 to 500 workers.
Amgen, based in Thousand Oaks, continues to lead in Division A, where the largest companies compete. Amgen 1, one of three Amgen teams, has been in the lead since the beginning. In Week 5, it won the men's softball and came in second in Frisbee golf.
County of Ventura 1 is in second place, trailing Amgen by 24 points. Naval Base Ventura County 1 is in third place.
"After six weeks and all these events it will come down to the tug of war as it does every year," said Eric Burton, Corporate Games organizer with the city of Ventura. "It's also by far the most fun event to watch."
Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, teams will take part in a sand castle contest and the tug o' war competition at Harbor Cove Beach at the end of Spinnaker Drive in Ventura. They also will have picnics, barbecues and live music. The closing awards ceremony is set for 2 p.m.
"We'll be handing out four team unity awards, one for each division, and there'll also be trophies for each of the four division winners," Burton said.
