Oxnard cracks down on public alcohol use

The Oxnard City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to give preliminary approval to a new ordinance intended to toughen enforcement against alcohol in public parks.

The ordinance prohibits possession of any open receptacle containing alcohol in a public park and creates a new civil fine, starting at $100 for each violation.

“I’m very happy. I think it’s something the police will be able to sink their teeth into,” said Joe Avelar, chairman of the Lemonwood Neighborhood Council.

A current ordinance that prohibits drinking but not possession has been difficult to enforce, city officials have said.

Avelar, who spoke in favor of the new ordinance, said he’s been concerned about too many soccer players from other parts of the city and out of town coming to Lemonwood Park, drinking beer while they play and then urinating on the trees.

The ordinance must be approved again at a future council meeting before it will become final.

While the police are in the parks writing tickets for public drinking, can they also make people pick up their trash? Our neighborhood park (in Oxnard...I know, I must be a peasant!)gets a lot of use on the weekends, which is totally cool, and personally I've never seen anyone drunk and out of control.

But it's the disregard for cleaning up after themselves that pisses me off. And more trash cans should be put in the parks on holiday weekends. My grandfather always taught us to leave a place better then it was when we got there. This applied to work, camping, home, whatever.

Come on, show some respect. Pick up your fricken' trash!

A lot of comments have been removed by staff. Could these comments be racially charged?
Good work, staff.

Mine was agreeing with someone that it's disgusting when people change diapers and leave the dirty diapers in parking lots and stores.

Living at the beach, I see nothing but trash by Sunday evenings in what is our backyard. You bring it in, pack it out, don't just leave it. I don't think those from town would appreciate us leaving our trash in their backyards. Alcohol isn't a problem at Oxnard Shores, but I'm all for keeping drunks out of our parks..Oxnard State Beach Park, has it's share of drunks showing up for kids birthdays...great example! Get em OPD.

how do they expect to collect a fine from someone who is here illegally? and yes, I know. not all the people drinking in the parks are illegals. I am just saying...

and I always leave my area cleaner than when I arrived. of course, now I need a friggin permit to have a bbq in a ventura park. ugh.

This should have been under control years ago. This is nothing new. If this had been monitored maybe it wouldn't be so out of control.
