Council to buy building to start redevelopment
Port Hueneme has taken a step toward the long-delayed redevelopment of its downtown by approving the purchase and demolition of a commercial building.
The City Council last week approved an appropriation of $749,000 from the Central Community Low and Moderate Income Housing Fund for an 8,063-square-foot building at 241 E. Port Hueneme Road.
Plans to resurrect Port Hueneme's town center with a mix of housing, stores and offices have been under discussion for more than 20 years.
The city's agreement with the project's developer expired in April and a new developer will have to be secured and other properties purchased before plans can move forward, city officials said.
