Academic Decathlon team needs money to go to D.C.

Moorpark High School's Academic Decathlon team, this year's national champion, needs financial support to go to Washington, D.C., over Memorial Day weekend to meet with the president.

Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Simi Valley, is trying to arrange a private meeting with President Bush and other members of Congress.

The nine-member team and coach Larry Jones are set to leave May 23 but need donations to cover the flight and accommodations, estimated at about $20,000.

Community Access Partners of San Buenaventura (CAPS-TV), Ventura's public access cable station, is co-producing a documentary on the Academic Decathlon that will feature the Moorpark team as well as teams from Oxnard and Simi Valley.

The documentary is meant to showcase the students' preparation for competition.

The students deserve as much recognition as those competing in sports activities, said Rich Burlingham, the filmmaker behind the project. A percentage of the film's net proceeds will benefit local academic programs.

CAPS-TV is accepting donations to enable the team and film crew to travel to Washington. Donors will also receive credit in the documentary.

Send tax-deductible donations to CAPS-TV, 65 Day Road, Ventura, 93003. Please note on the check that it is for the Academic Decathlon.

For more information, contact Burlingham at 658-0500 or rburlingham@capstv.org.
