Chief Probation Officer Karen Staples announced Monday the promotion of Division Manager Mark Varela to Chief Deputy Probation Officer.
He replaces former Chief Deputy Probation Officer Don Krause, who retired in March after 34 years with the Probation Agency.
Varela, who has been with the agency since 1988, was promoted to division manager four years ago and was assigned to the new Juvenile Services Division and the Juvenile Facilities' Commitment Unit.
Before that, he had been a supervising deputy probation officer since July 1997, serving in the Juvenile Supervision Unit, the Training Unit, and on the transition team moving into the new Juvenile Facilities.
"We are proud of Mark's achievement in the area of juvenile supervision and services, as well as his reputation with staff as a strong leader," Staples said in a prepared statement. "He brings a wealth of experience to his new assignment and will be a valuable asset to my executive management team."
