About 75 Obama supporters gathered at the Cameron Center on Saturday, clipboards in hand, ready to hit the streets to register new voters. Their efforts yielded 93 voters. This event was part of the national Vote for Change effort hosted by grassroots Obama volunteers across the country.

Special guest was Mary Ellen Early, a California Super Delegate, who has endorsed Senator Obama. Her heart-felt encouragement was well received and termed "outstanding" by more than one listener.

Master of Ceremonies Sandy Emberland, member of the Ventura County Democratic Central Committee, asked how many in attendance were volunteering for the first time on a political campaign, and two/thirds of the hands reached for the sky. Event Organizer Roni Flowers welcomed our Pledged Obama Delegates - Sandy Emberland & Jay Kapitz. Deborah Dent, 24th CD Organizer and Tony Pierce, Precinct coordinator, were recognized for their hard work.

Sue Broidy & Helen Conly, founders of Vote Blue, conducted training & answered questions on filling out voter registration forms. Kiren Dosanjh Zucker, associate professor at CSUN, explained free speech rights in private shopping centers.

As volunteers arrived, they were greeted by a Barack Obama cutout, took photos with him and enjoyed a continental breakfast.

The excitement and enthusiasm was contagious as volunteers dispersed to pre-selected registration sites throughout the area, fired up and ready to go!. Each team was provided a complete kit of voter registration forms, instructions, buttons, bumper stickers and signs.

Volunteers returned about 2:30 and shared their experiences with each other. The delicious sandwiches, snacks & homemade cookies provided by the food committee contributed to the festive atmosphere. Much of the food was donated by local businesses and unions.

It was amazing to see so many volunteers with such enthusiasm three months after the California primary. There are more events being planned - check out www.mybarackobama.com for details.
