Oaks Christian has mixed results at Div. IV Prelims

It was great news and bad for the Oaks Christian School track and field program last Saturday.

Lauren Radke shattered her own Division IV girls' pole vault record by a foot by clearing 12 feet in a section preliminary meet at Carpinteria High.

The two-time defending Division IV champion advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Finals on Saturday at Mount San Antonio College.

Chris Owusu, recovering from an injury that kept him out of the Ventura County Championships two weeks ago, turned in the fourth fastest boys' 100-meter time in the state with a 10.59 seconds. The Oaks Christian senior also advanced in the 200.

The bad news for Oaks Christian was that two former champions did not advance. Two-time defending Division IV champion Rosanne Fleming placed 10th in the 1,600 in 5:23.34 and will be the first alternate. Shannon Armstrong, the 2006 Division IV high jump champion, did not qualify after clearing 5-0.

Fleming did qualify in the 800 with a time of 2:20.60.

Area athletes competed in four divisional preliminary meets Saturday throughout Southern California. The top nine finishers in each event automatically advanced to the Finals.

Among other area Division IV boys' qualifiers were: Patrick Hall (100 and 200), James Short (200 and long jump), Blayne Lewis (400) and Vaughn Dotsy (shot put and discus), St. Bonaventure; Cierre Wood (100), Santa Clara; and Jules Sharpe (high jump and triple jump), Oaks Christian.

Janessa Rose of St. Bonaventure posted the fastest qualifying time in the Division IV girls' 1,600 at 5:09.84 and qualified in the 800.

La Reina's Sasha Blanchard qualified in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump. Teammate Sarah Pearson qualified in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Other Division IV girls' qualifiers included: Emani Truluck (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and triple jump), Malibu; Sierra Mangus (pole vault), Fillmore; and Erica Whitley (high jump), St. Bonaventure.

In the Division I Prelims at Trabuco Hills, Royal's Travis Edwards turned in a personal-best time of 4:16.34 to qualify in the boys' 1,600. Not advancing was county leader Michael Barnes of Ventura, who placed 14th in 4:21.31.

Edwards wasn't the only Royal qualifier. Philip Burks was fourth in the triple jump and Thomas Garner was sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Buena's Julian Carriger advanced in the 400 with a time of 48.98. Ventura's Ryan Rosales was fifth in the discus at 158-1.

Rogelio Reyes of Ventura turned in a county-leading performance in the boys' 300 hurdles of 39.47. He is the second alternate in that event.

The only Division I girls' qualifiers were Ventura's Kristen Wilson (shot put) and Alexandra Morgan (discus).

Oak Park made its mark at the Division III Prelims at Warren.

Courtney Lightfoot and Tayler Johnson were among 10 Oak Park athletes advancing to the Divisional Finals.

Lightfoot advances in the 1,600 (5:05.54) and 3,200 (10:57.54). Johnson qualified in the high jump (5-3) and long jump (17-11).

Brittney Harper of Calabasas qualified in the girls' 200 and 400. Calabasas' Clayton Graham posted the third fastest qualifying time in the 1,600 of 4:22.35. Nordhoff's Joe Finley qualified eighth in the boys' 3,200 at 9:36.98.
