CAMARILLO

Senior advocate to talk of vet benefits

Veterans and surviving spouses are invited to a free presentation highlighting veteran's aid and attendance pension at 2 p.m. Friday at AlmaVia of Camarillo, 2500 Ponderosa Drive North.

The talk is presented by Bill Fisher, a senior advocate who has spent the past 15 years advocating the need for accurate and verifiable information about financial aid programs for long-term care.

Fisher will review the requirements for obtaining this benefit, the assets and income limits and the benefit amounts.

MOORPARK

Presentation on Medicare offered

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) will give a free presentation on Medicare and what services are available through that program.

The presentation will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Moorpark Active Adult Center, 799 Moorpark Ave.

Topics covered will include "Medicare Preventive Pneumonia Injection Program" and "Medicare Fraud."

SANTA PAULA

Appointments for screenings available

Appointments are still available for carotid artery screenings on May 20 and peripheral artery disease screenings on May 27 at the Santa Paula Senior Center, 530 W. Main St.

This free service is made possible by a grant from the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging and is part of a countywide "Strike Out Stroke" program.

Appointments are required, and participants must be age 60 or older and Ventura County residents.

Health screenings (including blood tests for cholesterol, blood sugar and anemia) by Public Health nurses will also be available on those days by appointment.

SIMI VALLEY

Brain Gym introduction class set

An introduction class for Brain Gym will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. May 23 at the Vintage Simi Hills, 5300 E. Los Angeles Ave.

Brain Gym activities are easy physical movements that synchronize body and mind to optimize learning and performance. The deadline for the introduction class is May 19.

Brain Gym is also offered from 10 to 11 a.m. May 29, June 5, June 12 and June 19.

THOUSAND OAKS

Conejo Valley RSVP seeks volunteers

Conejo Valley Retired & Senior Volunteer Program is recruiting men and women age 55 and older to volunteer at a variety of local nonprofit agencies:

n Lutheran Social Services need volunteers in reception to answer phones and greet clients. Volunteers will be trained to refer clients to appropriate services.

Also needed are teachers for parenting classes, as well as classes on how to write résumés and how to job hunt.

n Hospice of the Conejo needs volunteers to help with light office work and answering telephones. Volunteers would also help with bulk mailing when needed.

VENTURA

Solutions for Seniors panel offered

Solutions for Seniors, an educational panel, will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. May 22 at The Palms, Assisted Living & Memory Care, corner of Telegraph and Wells roads.

This panel is made up of local professionals from the senior healthcare field. The goal is to present the resources available to seniors and their families in Ventura County.

Topics will include "Care in the Home," "Choosing the Right Care Facility" and "Importance of Long Term Care Insurance."

A spaghetti dinner will be provided.

The event is free. Seating is limited. To register, call 647-0616.
