Community college baseball playoffs: Santa Ana ends VC's season with 18-4 win in Game 2
The Ventura College baseball team was swept out of the Southern California regional playoffs by top seed Santa Ana for the second time in three years Saturday morning.
After slipping by in 10 innings on Friday, the host Dons made no mistake in Saturday's Game 2, piling up 24 hits, half of which for extra bases, in an 18-4 win.
Ventura ends its season 28-15.
Santa Ana (34-11) put up three runs in the second inning, seven runs in the fifth inning and five runs in the sixth inning, punishing Ventura starter Garrett Rau (4-5) for 15 hits and 11 runs in five innings.
Only five of Rau's runs against were earned as the Pirates made two crucial errors in the seven-run fifth inning.
Kyle Hardman, who homered with one out in the ninth to Friday to spoil Ventura's 7-4 lead, again had the big hit for the Dons in the fifth, clubbing a three-run shot.
Derek Eligio had five hits, Travis Leverson was 4 for 4 with three runs scored and Marcus Piazzisi was 3 for 3 with three RBIs for Santa Ana.
Sophomore Zack Anderson was 2 for 3 with a run scored to complete a strong series for Ventura. The Ventura High product had a home run and three RBIs on Friday.
Kyle Mertin, the Orange Empire Conference Pitcher of the Year, took the ball for Santa Ana and allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings.
Tyler Bevan drove in Anderson with a sacrifice fly after Anderon's one-out triple in the sixth. Bevan singled in the eighth and scored on Renaldo Garcia's two-run home run.
