Police will crack down on seat-belt scoffers

Police departments throughout Ventura County over the next three weeks will be aggressively enforcing seat-belt laws that require everyone in a vehicle to buckle up.

The enforcement comes as part of California's 2008 Click It or Ticket campaign that begins Monday and runs through June 1.

Tickets for first-time violators range from $80 to $91 for adults, and $330 to $401 for occupants under 16.

The state Office of Traffic Safety estimates 94.6 percent of California drivers obey the seat-belt law.

An estimated 1.5 million injuries and deaths have been prevented since the Click It or Ticket campaign started in 2005, officials said.

"click it or ticket" what hideous bureaucrat came up with that one? the revenuer's BS the public with outrageous lies (An estimated 1.5 million injuries and deaths have been prevented since the Click It or Ticket campaign started in 2005, officials said) then randomly tax us.

this is absolutely about money, ask the police for help, they will laugh at you, unless they are somehow benefiting (money or good publicity) . then they will all stand up at a ridiculous press conference and make ridiculous claims.

we called the police about vandalism in our school. People has repeatedly broken into our garden shed trashing our school's garden. You know what they told us, "We're pretty busy right now." They didn't DO ANYTHING. Thanks VCPD! We appreciate all of your hard work in protecting our community *cough**bs*

I see they are too busy pulling people over for seatbelt tickets. WTF does it matter to you, if I die from not wearing my seatbelt. Not like me not wearing a seatbelt is going to hurt you. Heck it's one less person to use valuable resources on this planet. I guess I don't get these laws that prevent peole from hurting themselves, aren't we over populated already?

Nanny state running wild. Now that revenue is short, by all means make the masses pay more. What a load of crap. As if they have nothing better to do. That law ought to be repealed. If I ever see an initiative calling for repeal I will sign it ten times.

Fewer seatbelt wearers = fewer right-wing nutjobs. Repeal the seat belt law!

Of course, fewer seat belts probably also means fewer kids surviving car accidents, too. Hmm. Nothing's ever as simple as it seems.

the seatbelt law can be repealed without effecting the child safety seat requirements.

You guy who want the seat belt law repealed, are nuts, do you know what it will cost you when one of these dumb people drive with out the seat belt have an accident, they don't get killed but just messed up, and with no insurance you will be paying for the rest of your life for the medical treatment that they will be getting for the rest of their life, sitting around doing nothing. Nail them all, Seat belts save lives and they also keep you whole. So don't wear them pay the fine. Makes for a good reason for the police to stop you and maybe check you out more, may even catch a few illegals this way.

Just wear the belt! For crying out loud!

You guys are dumb, really for lack of a better word. Just buckle your seat belt. Whats so hard about that?

Rememer people, the piggies have quotas. Their trying to make their numbers, when numbers (goal) aren't met this is when they harass the innocent citizens.

I want the name of the official that said "An estimated 1.5 million injuries and deaths have been prevented since the Click It or Ticket campaign started in 2005"

Bureaucrats know they can belch out almost anything and most people will except it at face value, they are laughing at and insulting the public, it is them against us, and believe me the police hate the anyone not in uniform.

Emmy, get your facts straight, I know for a fact they do not have quotas. Now on the other hand, if they are not producing anything, then they are not doing their job; however, they do not have a quota....

It's very simple, buckle up!

While they are enforcing the seat-belt law will the police be enforcing p.c 834 b I don't think so that brings in no money. Remember a traffic stop is an arrest. The police in this area choose the laws they will enforce. They enforce the ones that bring in the money. if you do not know what 834b pc is look it up.By the way I wear my seat belt Coach Holly taught me well.

re: caokie's comment about California's Penal Code 834b pc. Go to:http://www.americanpatrol.com/REFE... and you will see the description. I have seen these seatbelt crackdowns before this other issue and doubt that these are acts to curb the other activity. It may be an aid, however.

Why not just enforce 834b P.C.? That should take care of the overcrowding in this state. Then just buckle up and we won't have to worry about the population being too big. We could call it the "Get out or we'll send you out" campaign. Sounds good to me! We need this seat belt law. Because like one of the previous comments noted, if we don't, one of these people will get in an accident and not die. Then we'll have to pay for them forever. And trust me folks, we can't pay for that because billions of illegal aliens depend on our hard earned cash to support them!!!

I really don't understand what the problem is here so let me see if this is correct: it is safer to wear a seatbelt in the event of a crash yet you don't want to because you don't want someone telling you what to do. You people make no sense to me. Calling the police "piggies" shows ignorance and a lack of class, Emmy. Our home was broken into a few years ago and the police were positively useless at helping us but that doesn't mean I'm going to resort to name-calling and being ignorant. Wear your seatbelt because it's safe to do so. Wear your seatbelt because it's required by law. If you don't and you get a ticket, that is YOUR fault, not the government's or the police department's. You are just showing your own stupidity and immaturity.

When this law was passed they told us it would not be used as a reason to pull people over. Guess they lied again eh?

Posted by srcheek on May 12, 2008 at 5:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Come on, people. Suck it up, buckle up, and shut up. Your incessant whining over a safety issue is riduculous. You people have entirely too much free time on your hands if your biggest concern is that you are required to, gasp!, wear your seatbelt. Oh, the horror.

Posted by sslocal on May 12, 2008 at 9:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It's not a matter of safety. It's a matter of freedom. If I want to act in dangerous maner the state should care less. That is, as long as I am not endagering others. It is not the states problem if I act in a dangerous maner, it is my problem.
Take your liberal ethics someplace else.

It has nothing to do with liberal ethics (particularly being a registered Republican).
I suppose you're right that everyone has the freedom to be negligent. For the record, "manner" has two n's, not one. Learn to spell before you try to express yourself and expose your lack of intelligence.

Learn manners and you might get respect.
