11 family members without home after fire

Eleven members of an Oxnard family were left without a home early Thursday after a fire destroyed their residence along the 1300 block of Juneberry Place.

Oxnard Fire Department firefighters extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes after arriving, officials said.

Five adults and six children were displaced.

No one was injured in the fire, which caused an estimated $100,000 in damage.

The fire started in a bathroom exhaust fan around 2 a.m. and spread to the attic, fire officials said. Three fire engines responded to the blaze.

Eleven people in one house??? WoW!!!

Parking in that neighborhood must be a groove. Just out of curiosity, wonder if the garage was converted. Oxnard doesn't seem to care...

Do you think this backs up councilman Flynn's statements???????????

With the recession were in , we are going to see alot more of this . More people living in one house. Thank God no one was hurt during the fire.

http://www.venturacountystar.com/news... Sounds like there are plenty of empty homes, with eleven they'll two.

Isn't there a city ordinance regarding how many people can live in one house based on how many bedrooms it has? And the recession won't make much difference in Oxnard....this city has been plagued with multi families in one house, and garages turned into bunkrooms for many many years. And the city just lets it slide. Drive thru most older working class neighborhoods and you'll see bumper to bumper cars at the curb, and on the lawn etc. The term "clown house" definitely applies.

desdave, there is not an ordinance restricting the number of persons living in a home based on how many bedrooms, in Oxnard or in the state codes. The price of housing is so high in this area it takes more people to put their money into the pot to pay the rent or mortgage. Until housing prices lower to a reasonable rate this will continue. If Mr Flynn is successful booting all the people out of overcrowded houses, where does he expect them to go? Also, building so many neighborhoods with alleys has contributed to the parking issue. Homes with garages in front have driveways capable of parking several cars on. Alley homes with rear garages do not have driveways at all, thus cars must be parked on the street if not in the garage. Don't get me wrong, I'm against overcrowding, but we need to be realistic about the problems and what cause them.

DesDave, There was at one time. I think it was meant towards people renting to familys. Only so many allowed per bedroom. So yes your correct in your theory........
Now owning a home, They may not be able to tell you how many can live there.

This is SO ridiculous. Neighborhoods are being destroyed. Politicians need to get off their butts and stop this. There does not need to be that many people in the house. No one is getting my pity. You reap what you sow. If you choose to live that many to a house and it burns, no one is to blame but you for living that way, and if you can't afford to live as a one family then get out of CA. People just don't use their heads.

People lose their home to a fire and all you people can think about is the amount of people living inside the home. I don't agree with multiple families living in one home but I feel like having compassion today.
Hey, the Brady Bunch had 9 people living in one house including Alice. Then they had Tiger and Fluffy, which makes 11. Did they get criticized?
A woman recently became pregnant with her 18th child, is that wrong too?

Whatever, get out of california? When was the last time you bought some local fresh strawberries?

There is an element out there that takes no pride in their community and destroys both neighborhoods and stores. Example: Go to any store in Oxnard and then go to that same store in, say, Camarillo. One is destroyed with kids running around unattended and the other is nice and orderly.

Sounds pretty low for a home in Oxnard the usual is is about 5 family members per every bedroom. To that person who asked where will these family members go if they get booted out of their homes. Oh, I don't know maybe back to Mexico. As a hispanic person myself I'm disgusted with our culture and our heritage. We have a bad reputation thanks to these "other" people that it sickens me..

Yes 11 people were living in a home but in this area where the rent is extremely high I'm not surprised. I hope Red Cross and local charities get this family back on their feet.

prophet=it is normal for 5 people per room? I don't know where you live but that is not normal. That is overcrowding!!! I have lived in Oxnard all my live and I know no one, and no one I know, knows any one who have 5 people per room. 5 people per home but not 5 per room. Unless you did a type-o, I had to read that twice.

That however isn't what this is about any way. I am glad no one was hurt. And I agree that we need to show some compassion, it is a good thing no one got hurt. I feel bad especially for the children.

Good night...

Welcome to Oxnard. Population "TOO HIGH" and increasing. It's certainly NOT what it used to be. :-/

Overcrowding IS a problem.
But, I did not see anywhere in the article, how many bedrooms this house had.
Was it a one-bedroom house? Two Bedrooms? Five bedrooms?
Eleven people in a five-bedroom house is not overcrowding...just a very large family.

I dont care how many kids you have, as long as the parent can raise them, and they dont require ANY OF MY HARD EARNED (welfare, social services, county medical)

If she carries private insurance and can provide for them with her own "income", all power to her.

If she is a multi millionaire, go for it!

I am sure Red Cross was called for this family, and they are being very well taken care of. Most likely better than before, hotel accomadations and free food...it is all good! They also help with transportation, bus vouchers, so they can get to work/school etc.

It is very sad that there was so much damage, hopefully they will get placement elsewhere soon.

Bruce, I would like to know where in this article does it state that this family could not afford their home, were on welfare and pretty much low-lifes like you want to assume? My friends live on the next street. They have a 3000 square foot home, 6 bedrooms. Plenty of room for 11 people. In fact, they have 6 kids of their own. They can afford it. They have 4 vehicles and they also have a landscaper.
Don't sound like poor low-icome losers like you want to assume.

I hope my brother's home doesn't catch fire anytime soon because they will have to move in with us or my parent's home and that might not be up to any of your standards with so many people living in it.

Brucevacumesrooster,Bruce I did read that story .Yes they can afford it they have over a 7,000 sq.ft home. I am assumming in the South. My Cousin has 12 kids and does just fine with his income. If fact they also just built a larger home. Some people can do it. Some can't.
I do agree five in one bedroom is too much. But I would rather see them with a roof over thier head until they get on thier feet then living on the streets. I dont know if thats the case......

I'm amazed at how many comments have been drawn to the attention of the household size, without knowing all the facts of the family and/or interested to know how the family is doing.

Brucie, let's compare College Degrees to determine intelligence. Re-read your own comments...select words were mentioned about a woman with 18 kids, not being able to afford it and so forth.

11 family members hurting and in pain for what just happened and all you ignorant think of is parking and how many people were living there...wow...do you pay their bills? to be commenting on how they were living...

people make assumptions based on what they see around them every day. I dont think anyone is being out of line for assuming that 11 people in this house (inc 5 adults) is an overcrowded environment. 2 adults and 6 kids is a little much for me, but if they can afford it, more power to them. but 5 adults and 6 kids has multi-family written all over the walls. and I am sorry, but the homes and neighborhoods built in So Cal are not built for multi-families. they are single family residences. it sucks that these people are being displaced, but if you have to share a home with multiple families, perhaps you should look at relocating to a place a little more in-line with your budget. if that means moving to the desert, then so be it. if that means moving back to your own country, then even better.
