Permit for dancing OK'd at sports bar

Planning Commission votes 4-1, even though restaurant near residential area

The Simi Valley Planning Commission approved a permit on Wednesday to allow amplified music and dancing at the Yankee Doodles Sports Bar and Grill.

The Planning Commission voted 4 -1, with commissioner Jim Dantona Jr. dissenting, to allow the owners of Yankee Doodles to have music and dancing, even though the business is close to a residential area. The decision by the commission can be appealed within 14 days.

Yankee Doodles is at 2830 Tapo St., which was once occupied by the Treehouse Sports Bar and Grill.

Representatives for Yankee Doodles said a noise engineer was hired by the business to determine that the sound coming from amplified music inside the club was at acceptable levels and would not be a nuisance to area residents. The owners of Yankee Doodles also moved the dance floor to the opposite side of the building, away from the residences on nearby streets.

City officials noted the business owners already have to follow restrictions under the California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control, including having a certain number of security guards patrolling the establishment to prevent loitering. Currently, Yankee Doodles is required by the department to close at 11 p.m., even though other similar establishments in the city close at 2 a.m.

Many of the restrictions placed on the business were established because of problems at the Treehouse, city officials said.

Police officials said so far the number of calls they have received to respond to incidents at the business has been very low for that type of establishment.

Dantona said he opposed the permit because it did not have a condition that would prevent outside promoters from having events at the business.

"It's when you bring in other companies that don't have the best interest of the city and its residents, that's when problems arise," Dantona said.
