Officers enforcing seat belt law

More from Breaking News
Police departments throughout Ventura County will be actively enforcing a seat belt law that requires all vehicle occupants to buckle up.
The enforcement comes as part of California's 2008 "Click It or Ticket" campaign taking place May 12 through June 1.
State law requires everyone in a vehicle to wear a seat belt at all times. Tickets for first-time violators range from $80 to $91 for adults, and $330 to $401 for occupants under 16.
The state Office of Traffic Safety estimates 94.6 percent of California drivers obey the seat-belt law.
An estimated 1.5 million injuries and deaths have been avoided since the Click It or Ticket campaign started in 2005.

I'm sorry but why not "actively enforce" this law 365 days a year?
How many of the recent traffic fatalities (many of them teens and young people) could have been prevented had these people been wearing their seatbelts?
I'm not saying law enforcement is THE answer...but its one of the few tools we have in saving lives...
Of course even with this law on the books, Darwin is ALWAYS going to come into play...there is NO citation amount that will ever prevent that...

It is enforced 365...it's just advertised May 12 - June 1st...My husband is in court all the time for writing these tickets...people think that the cop will be on vacation or have another case and it will get dismissed. They fight them because like Sneed they think it is BS.

If laws are made for saving lives, then Motorcycles would be banned. You are still safer in an accident while in a car without your seatbelt. So if the objective is to save lives, then why not ban motorcycles. Another Point why not ban SUV's, since an accident with a SUV involved will be more fatal than a Honda Civic. Another Point: Talking on the Phone is now the number one cause of accidents, yet the fine for talking on the phone ($20)is nothing close to the fine for no seat belt ($84). So if they want to save more lives, then make the fine for talking on the phone more. I am all for wearing seat belts, however I find that we overlook the root cause of accidents, and overlook the impact driving beasts has on everyone (gas prices, insurance premiums, safe road ways) The laws are not about making sense, but about making laws.

On May 1st, a Santa Paula police officer was knocked silly in his patrol car when it collided with another car. This was reported in the Star, with NO mention of seatbelts. Now since the Police are above the law, they don't have to wear seatbelts. So much for equal protection under the Law.....Snead_Hearn, Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness are just old words on an old document....I am so very sad to say.

Who says Police Officers are above the law? Usually people that have difficult following the laws themselves make that statement.
The bottom line is people need to be responsible for themselves. It's too bad that the Police have to babysit people to ensure that they are safe. It's called Public Safety folks. Nothing is "big brother". I wish each street corner had cameras. If you aren't guilty of anything, you wouldn't have to worry.
Teach your children to be responsible....wear your seatbelt!!!!

Can a law abiding citizen carry a loaded gun? And if so, Can he/she shoot into a car that threatens them with bodily harm? I really don't know the answers to these questions but I am really curious.
