Fair hosting marrow donation registration

The National Marrow Donor Program will hold a bone marrow registry drive Saturday at the Simi Valley Street Fair.

The drive will honor 23-month-old Hailey Joy Kent, a Simi Valley toddler who had a stem cell transplant a year ago. The daughter of Maria and Rick Kent, Hailey Joy has acute lymphocytic leukemia along with a rare O-negative blood type.

During the program's nationwide recruitment campaign, there is no cost to join the registry.

To register, participants need to:

n Complete a registration form with contact information, health history and a signed agreement. Take a personal identification and contact information for two family members or friends who would know how to reach you if your address changes.

n Give a swab of cheek cells so your tissue type can be tested.

The donor's tissue type is then added to the registry. Doctors search the registry when they need to find a donor for their patients.

The street fair will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday on Cochran Street between Galena and Sequoia avenues.
