VC Community Orchestra Concert May 10
Nine soloists are featured in the Saturday, May 10, 2008 concert of the Ventura College Community Orchestra. The concert is at the Ventura College Theatre at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students, staff and seniors, and $10 for the general audience. They are available at the door the evening of the performance.
Joshua Hong plays keyboard in the famous Bach "Brandenburg Concerto No. 5." He is a Discovery Artist with the New West Symphony this year. Joining him is soloist Irving Weinstein playing violin. He is the concertmaster of the Community Orchestra.
Kim Curtis and Bonnie Griffin are the principal flute players in the Orchestra. They will play the flute solo parts. The concerto shows Bach at his most energetic. The keyboard part is especially thrilling with its extended solo part.Principal woodwind players from the orchestra are Peter Madsen playing clarinet and Kris King playing the bassoon. They play the "Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon" by Joseph Stamitz, a musician who toured Europe for many years. He came from a talented musical family in Mannheim, Germany where the modern orchestra was perfected. Even Mozart, when he visited Mannheim, was highly impressed by the level of music making.
Laura Wargo and Bailey Fator recently starred in the comedy "Time Out of Rhyme" which was given at Ventura College. The pair of sopranos was a smash hit. They will sing together again in the May 10 concert doing the famous "Flower Song Duet" from the opera "Lakme" by Delibes. Many know and love this piece. Yet very few know its name. That is because it has been used as the background for many short films, videos and commercials.
Peter Madsen, advanced piano and composition student at Ventura College, will conduct the percussion ensemble in "Five Pieces for Percussion Quartet," by Kraft. The concert concludes with the entire orchestra playing American Overture, an upbeat contemporary piece.
