Wakefield, Timlin share historic shutout

Tim Wakefield and Mike Timlin had no idea they were making history Tuesday night.

For the first time in baseball's modern era, the Boston Red Sox had two pitchers over 40 combine on a shutout. Wakefield gave up just two hits in eight innings and Timlin got the final three outs of a 5-0 victory over the Tigers.

That was the only time that's happened since 1900, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"It's pretty cool," Wakefield said Wednesday. "I didn't know it until they told me, but it's nice to know you're the first."

The 41-year-old knuckleballer retired 17 straight batters and allowed just three men to reach base.

Timlin, 42, tied Jose Mesa and Lee Smith in eighth place on the all-time appearances list with 1,022. Kent Tekulve is seventh with 1,050.

Watson says Clemens not wanted on U.S. team: Roger Clemens isn't welcome on the U.S. Olympic baseball team.

U.S. general manager Bob Watson said he isn't considering the 45-year-old right-hander for his roster for the Beijing Games.

"From my standpoint, we don't need that type of distraction," Watson said.

In addition to his duties as vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball, Watson is general manager of professional baseball operations for USA Baseball and works to select manager Davey Johnson's roster.

A former GM of the Houston Astros and New York Yankees, Watson said he didn't anticipate being overruled by higher-ups.

Gaudin moving to A's bullpen: Chad Gaudin is moving from the Oakland Athletics' rotation to the bullpen, where he's spent most of his previous five major league seasons.

The A's need to make room for the return of right-handed starter Rich Harden, who is scheduled to come off the 15-day disabled list to start Sunday's series finale at Texas.

The 25-year-old Gaudin has a 3-2 record with a 3.75 ERA in six starts this season after he made 34 starts in 2007 as a full-time starter for the first time.

Giants send down struggling Hennessey, call up Sadler: Right-hander Brad Hennessey was optioned by the San Francisco Giants to Triple-A Fresno and replaced by right-hander Billy Sadler.

The 26-year-old Sadler, who pitched in five games with San Francisco in 2006, was 0-0 with a 1.13 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 16 innings at Fresno.

Mulder has rotator cuff strain: Cardinals starter Mark Mulder has a mild rotator cuff strain in his left shoulder, causing St. Louis to stop his injury rehabilitation assignment.

Mulder, coming back from two shoulder operations, was evaluated in St. Louis by team physician Dr. George Paletta. The Cardinals plan to rest Mulder for a week to 10 days before reevaluating him.

Twins to put Baker on DL, will recall Perkins: The Minnesota Twins will put right-hander Scott Baker on the 15-day disabled list and plan to recall left-hander Glen Perkins from Triple-A Rochester to take his place in the rotation.
