Whisenhunt: Chepley edges Schlub in Cooke series race

Dan Chepley prevailed by just six seconds over 14-year-old Cody Schlub in the second race of the Bob Cooke Memorial double handed series. Saturday's race was hosted by Channel Islands Yacht Club.

Chepley, of Ventura Yacht Club, sailed his Tripp 40, Colt 45, to a first-place finish in the spinnaker class in the 18-mile race. Schlub was first to finish on elapsed time aboard Funatic, a Choate 48, but lost by a nose on corrected time.

Chepley, with J.T. Smith as crew, took second place in the opening race and leads the series by three points with one race remaining, on June 7.

In the non-spinnaker class the Islander 29, Velero, continued her winning ways with Cooke's grandson, Brent Swanson at the helm. The non-spinnaker class sailed a 14-mile course.

Non-spinnaker: 1—Velero, Brent Swanson, 1:23:02; 2—Zuma Jay, Kevin Dickman, 1:30:35; 3—West Wing, Dennis West, 1:45:15.

Several Ventura County skippers brought home trophies from the recent Newport Beach to Ensenada race.

Outstanding efforts among the locals included:

n Mike Warns of Channel Islands Yacht Club won the 16-boat PHRF A class aboard Fifty One Fifty.

n Jerzy Poprawski of Anacapa Yacht Club, won the 11-boat Sprit B class in Superluminal.

n PK Edwards of Ventura Yacht Club placed second aboard Wind Dancer in the PHRF G class.

n Chuck Stanton of VYC was second in the 21-boat Cruz GA class aboard Baroness.

n Dan Chepley of VYC took fourth place in the PHRF C class aboard Colt 45.

n Dave Chase of VYC placed fifth in PHRF C aboard Uhambo.

n Brian Stanton of Pierpont Bay Yacht Club placed fourth in the 13-boat ORCA class aboard No Regrets.

n Bill Gibbs of PBYC placed fifth in the ORCA class in Afterburner.

n Michael Holbert of Ventura Sailing Club, placed fourth out of 11 boats in PHRF D aboard 3 Little Birds.

Upcoming sailboat races:

n Saturday, May 17, Hardway Race. Hosted by Pierpont Bay Yacht Club, this popular race starts at Santa Barbara and ends at Ventura and is one-third of PBYC's Island Series. The more adventurous skippers and crews opt to sail in the "Hardway" class, around Santa Cruz Island. Other classes take coastal routes.
