Killer gets life without parole for '05 murders of two Oxnard men
Convicted killer Jimmy Hunter on Wednesday was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for murdering two Oxnard men in 2005.
Shortly before Hunter was taken out of the courtroom, about a dozen friends and relatives screamed, yelled, cursed and cried after the judge turned down requests by family members to hug him before he was taken off to jail.
They stormed out of the courtroom and kept yelling and cursing as they left the courthouse.
Relatives of the victims — Davaun Dantay Washington and Olee Evans — said they were shocked by the outbursts.
"I am shocked. I've never seen anything like that," said Evans' sister, Katie Mitchell. "He murdered two people. His mother knew it, the grandmother. Everybody knew that he murdered these two people. They are shocked at his sentence. I'm shocked that they were so shocked."
"I can't believed people act like that. I just really can't," said Wanda Nixon, Washington's mother. "They need to consider that their son is still alive. Their son is still well. They can still see their son. We can't see our sons any more. Our sons are gone. Either way it goes, they've got the best end of the deal."
Prosecutor Richard Simon also was shocked.
"Everybody who knew Jimmy Hunter and was friends with him should have known what to expect," Simon said. "They should not have reacted the way they did. I mean, two lives were taken here. They seem to show no regard for the lives that were taken, instead lashed out at something they should have fully understood and known what was going to happen."
Before the outburst, a bailiff had already tossed one man out of court who disrupted the sentencing by shouting, "Jimmy, we got you."
During sentencing, Ventura County Superior Court Judge Edward Brodie said the evidence against Hunter, 21, was "overwhelming" and proceeded to give Hunter the maximum sentence allowed by law.
Hunter told the judge before the sentencing that he "truly feels for" the victims' families.
Then Hunter fired his attorney, Joe Villasana, who works for the county Public Defender's Office. Hunter said he could appeal his convictions.
"I felt I was not represented right by the Public Defender's Office," Hunter told the judge.
Villasana declined to comment as he walked out of the courtroom.
Simon told the judge that Hunter is a "cold-blooded human being," who deserved the maximum sentence.
"Hunter is a very dangerous person," Simon told the judge.
Simon said the District Attorney's Office did not seek the death penalty because of issues related to Hunter's mental health.
Prosecutors allege that Hunter is an associate of the Black Mafia criminal street gang.
In February, jurors found Hunter guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and determined he used a firearm to kill Washington and Evans. They found that Washington's murder was for financial gain and that Evans was killed during a robbery.
Evans was shot execution-style after a gun deal went sour, according to prosecutors. Evans, 47, was supposed to have $1,500 to buy some guns but had only $1,350, according to court testimony.
Washington, 22, was found dead in the hallway of his Oxnard home. Hunter believed he was going to get paid by an Oxnard drug dealer for the killing, prosecutors said.
Mitchell, Evans' sister, made the only oral victim-impact statement in court. She said Hunter needed to tell others while he is in prison about the consequences of his actions to help them stay out of the penitentiary.

It's time for us as african americans to wake up and smell the coffee. To the family of the victims, my heart and blesssings go out to you. As for the murderer who got life, you should consider yourself to be one lucky individual because frankily I would have given you the gas chamber and sent you to hell with your new master. I am so tired of the black community not taking responsbility for their own children. I mean there is only a quarter of African Americans in Oxnard, and they believe that killing their own brothers is something to brag about. I think you guys are a bunch of cowards. What happened to that time when we were men and if we had a dispute,we would knuckle up and both people got to go home to their families. Again, a bunch of cowards and the scary thing is that another gang member who is reading this blog is probably taking offense to this because they are a bunch of idiots without no home training. Stop blaming America for your problems and be part of the solution, not the problem.. WAKE UP..ONLY YOU CAN END THIS NIGHTMARE THAT YOU CREATED BY JOINING A GANG. STEP UP AND BE A MAN AND TAKE RESPONBILITY BLACK MAN..

Judge should have held all the family who disrespected his court room, in jail. That would have been awesome. Hey maybe they could get that ole' so eager hug they were waiting for. I feel bad for the victims family for having to watch that crap.

First off, this has nothing to do with ethinicity so cut the "black community" bull crap! everyone and anyone has to take responsibility for their actions. this is about 2 lives ( 2 sons/2 brothers/father/2 children) that were taken and justice had to be served. For the family of the victims- im sorry for your loss. To the family of the MURDERER be glad you still get to see your son. How can ppl be so rediculous and selfish! do you knw what it feels like to wake up and never see your loved-one ever again??.. be greatful he's still alive! you should be ashamed of yourselves. and i agree... the judge should have thrown them all in jail for their ghetto outburst!

805raised I can imagine how confused you feel. And i'm glad you are turning your life around.Hopefuly Jimmy can turn his friends around to.This is no life for anyone. What he did was horriable. And him having to wake up every day knowing this is a nightmare, his nightmare and he wrote the script.that he will Never be able to have a normal family life is sad.knowing he should be raising his son and by his own choice he is not.My heart goes out to the families of the victims. And to his son, none of them had a choice in this.Lets stop all this we are all human beings.

To Cast: Are you serious? We need to write the baby momma of Jimmy Hunter. For WHAT????? She knew what he did I didn't see her running to protect her own child by turning the father in. Let's not act like she's a victim. She knew what kind of monster she decided to have a kid by. Life is about choices and apparently she made the wrong choice. I just hold she will be a better influence on her son. Last thing we need in Oxnard is another young black man wanting to be a part of this BM. What kind of gang if that is what you want to call it. Kills their own and then turn and snitch. STUPID! LOSER! That have created a bunch of lost lives for no reason but finanical gain. $5000.00 isn't enough to pay for childcare for a year. It's time for people to grow up and take responsibility for their actions. With friends related in the BM heck you don't need no enemies because they we're all around you in what you called your family....I hope to all the young babies "MOMMA"S whatever that IS" I pray you have enough sense to raise your children and make them better and what that daddy's have left for them...which is NOTHING! Knowledge is POWER and that's my final ANSWER!
