Eager to set sail for Alaska, Lori Kind (right), winner of the Holland America cruise, thanks Dr. Jerry Miller of the Scandinavian Festival committee for the chance to win the grand prize at the Festival.

For Lori Kind of Newbury Park, the Scandinavian Festival at California Lutheran University sailed to a perfect ending. She won the grand prize of a cruise for two on the Holland America Line. Next stop--Alaska, as her chosen cruise.

Besides that and other prizes, the Festival on April 19-20 offered an array of activities and food for all ages. Good weather and a theme of "affordable family fun" attracted some 7,000 to the mix of Scandinavian folk music and dance, crafts for kids and adults, the Nobel Peace Court, demonstrations and presentations, the Scandinavian vintage car/motorcycle display and a Scandinavian worship service on Sunday.

Approximately 150 showed up specifically for the well-publiciized Danish lace-making demonstration. The children's drama about the Billy Goats Gruff and the evil Troll under the bridge involved many youngsters eager to don "goat garb" and defy the threatening Troll.

The new "street fair" arrangement for vendors on Memorial Parkway proved to be a hit for all, making "shopping" simpler and opening up Kingsmen Park on the campus for the stage show and functions such as the Viking Village and the Sami Encampment.

Visitors gobbled up the various Scandinavian foods at such a pace that the servers exhausted their supply before the Festival finished Sunday afternoon.

Co-chairs Eric Berg of Thousand Oaks and Lana Lundin of Camarillo expressed appreciation for their planning committee, several financial sponsors, the Cal Lutheran staff and more than 200 volunteers who made the Festival a success. Plans now are underway to build on that momentum for Scandinavian Festival 2009.
