A black bear makes it's way down a tree in Meiners Oaks on May 7, 2008. A homeowner on Mesa Dr. in Meiners Oaks found the bear in her backyard tree and called authorities who waited the bear out.
Police and Fire:
A black bear was spotted in a tree in Meiners Oaks this morning but apparently has returned to the wild unharmed, authorities said.
Ventura County Sheriff deputies said the bear was spotted along the 600 block of Mesa Drive. The owner of the property notified deputies of the bear at 6:08 a.m.
The bear at one point was about a half-mile from Nordhoff High School in Ojai, which was locked down this morning as a precaution. But the animal posed no threat to the students, sheriff's officials said.
By 10 a.m., the bear had returned to the forested area around the Ventura River, authorities said, and no further problems were anticipated.
----------
Traffic: The Ventura California Highway Patrol reported two traffic collisions this morning: one at Las Posas Road in Camarillo and a second along Highway 33 at Santa Ana Road. There was no further details on the collisions.
----------
Weather: There will be patchy fog along the Ventura County coast. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. A light wind out of the southwest of between 10 and 13 mph is expected.

"As of 7 a.m., deputies were waiting for Fish and Game wardens to arrive to take the bear down from the tree."
That totally bugs me - "take the bear down from the tree"......LEAVE IT ALONE!!

Hey, those bears are sneaky devils, he was probably going to take some poor unsuspecting picnic basket. Do you have any idea what a bear does to a picnic basket? It isn't pretty.

Wow, really news worthy, in-depth reporting. I spotted a brown rabbit in the conejo valley this afternoon....maybe I should call it in on their newsmaker line.

WELL JBH50, I THOUGHT IT WAS NEWSWORTHY....WHY NOT? IT ISN'T EVERYDAY THAT THERE ARE BEARS IN NEIGHBORHOODS SUCH AS THIS. RABBITS...WELL, DIFFERENT STORY & THERE REALLY IS NO COMPARISSON. I THOUGHT THIS WAS A COOL STORY , ALSO WITH A PIC OF THE DUDE IN THE TREE.

Actually the tree the bear was in is just a few blocks from Meiners Oaks Elementary School. It sure stirred my interest. I live next to the school and heard the lockdown announcement on the school's PA. "Teachers and students, return to and remain in your classrooms, lock the doors and close the windows, but you do not have to take shelter under your desks. There is a bear loose in the community"
I was relieved, it wasn't a "Columbine" incident. And I am glad the man didn't "Columbine" the bear.

Okay, I just moved here and you Ojai people are cracking me up because you don't give a rat's ass if there's a bear running around. That's so cool.
