Smith: Addressing a fundamental

More from Golf TipsWhen addressing the ball, do not allow the right shoulder to raise up higher than the left or the right arm to be higher than the left arm. If this takes place, it leads to a dominant right side during the swing and may cause all types of swing problems, including making a player's swing come too much over the top.
At address, you want your spine to be tilting to your right (for lefties it would be the opposite). To achieve this, take your right hand off the club, place your palm just above your knee, leave the right shoulder in position and then grip the club.
From this position you will notice the following: The spine will have a tilt, the right shoulder will remain low, the head will be located behind the ball and the right arm will be softer with the elbow bent pointing at the right hip.
While it may sound strange, it is in fact a very fundamentally sound address position.
