Amgen retains its lead in Corporate Games

After four weeks of competition, Amgen continues its march toward victory in the 2008 Corporate Games organized by the city of Ventura.

More than 70 teams — made up of workers from employers in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties — are competing in more than 30 events, from basketball to table tennis and from billiards to surfing.

The six-week-long challenge will end May 17.

Thousand Oaks-based Amgen has three teams in Division A, where the largest employers compete, and its teams now stand in first, fifth and eighth places.

Amgen Team 1 leads with 110 points, with a close race for second between County of Ventura 1 with 76 points and Naval Base Ventura County with 73 points. The City of Ventura 1 is in fourth place.

There's no change at the top of Division B, either.

Ventura-based outdoor clothing manufacturer Patagonia remains in the lead with 71 points over Sage Publications of Thousand Oaks with 55 points and then a close race for third between Teledyne Scientific and Imaging in Thousand Oaks, Casa Pacifica of Camarillo and the Ventura County Star.

"It's exciting that we place in anything," said Sharon Rubin, team coordinator for PTI Technologies of Oxnard, which is taking part for the first time this year. "We are really enjoying the games and in everything we've played, we've had a lot of fun. It's awesome."

The last week brought changes, however, in Division C, made up of teams from companies with 51-150 employees.

Imation, a manufacturer based in Camarillo, and Valex, a Ventura-based manufacturer and distributor, share the top spot with 54 points each. Last week's leader, Deckers Outdoors of Goleta, fell back to third place with 53 points.

In Division D, Jano Graphics of Ventura kept its first-place position, which it has held since the first week of the competition. The team won in men's softball and the billiards to take their overall score to 50.

In second place with 36 points is ENSR, an environmental and energy services company, which placed third in men's softball. Fugro West is in third place with 35 points after winning the miniature golf and coming third in the 5k and 10k runs.

City of Oxnard won the men's softball competition, and Clinicas Del Camino Real was the overall winner in the 5k and 10k runs to score its first big points in the games.

Clinicas team coordinator Gonzalo Paz acknowledged that their performance has been disappointing compared to previous years.

"We usually do better in soccer and volleyball but our star players weren't available this year," said Paz.

Teams will compete in several events, including Frisbee golf at Lake Casitas on Saturday and a golf tournament May 14, before the final awards ceremony May 17 at Harbor Cove Beach in Ventura.
