Legal class focuses on mental illness
A course aimed at educating legal professionals on mental illness from the families' perspective begins Friday.
Sponsored by the Ventura County affiliate of the National Association on Mental Illness, the course is designed for judges, attorneys and other court professionals.
It will be taught by family members, an attorney who has a family member with mental illness, and a person who has been diagnosed with mental illness.
Topics to be covered include schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, how the brain is affected by mental illness, what it's like to step inside the brain of someone who is ill, medication and the role of mental health courts.
The cost is $50 for private attorneys. Scholarships are available for county employees and those for whom the fee would be a hardship.
Organizers plan to offer the eight-hour course on successive Friday afternoons in May and June at the Ventura College of Law, 4475 Market St., Ventura.
The first session is from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and May 16. The class will be repeated from 1 to 5 p.m. June 20 and 27.
