Sculpture unveiled at Aquinas College

A new sculpture unveiled April 24 at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula is likely to be a Ventura artist's last commissioned piece.

Charles "Chuck" Kubilos, 79, crafted the 5-foot bronze statue that depicts a seated St. Thomas Aquinas teaching with a book in hand, according to a statement from the college.

The statue is in the foyer of the college's new faculty office building.

Originally from Oklahoma, Kubilos moved to Ventura County in 1962 and worked as a mechanical engineer before taking up sculpting as a career.

He said he was already retired when he was asked to undertake the project, which was commissioned last year by the college's founding president and faculty member, Dr. Ronald P. McArthur, and his wife, Marilyn.

The sculptor said he spent eight months making a plaster pattern for the piece before sending it to a Hollywood studio to be cast in bronze.

Having re-entered retirement, Kubilos said he plans to continue sculpting in his spare time, making family portraits and gifts.

His work in Ventura County includes a wood carving of the Last Supper at Ojai Presbyterian Church and a fiberglass composite memorial statue at Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme.
