The Oxnard College softball qualified for the Southern California regional playoffs in just its second year of existence.
Its reward? Top seed and 2006 state champion Cypress College.
Alyssa Freight pitched five shutout innings and Kayla Van Dieren hit a two-run triple in the first inning as host Cypress eliminated Oxnard, 8-1, Sunday afternoon.
Cypress, which took the first game of the best-of-three series 7-3 Saturday, clinched the first-round series 2-0 and improved to 49-2.
Oxnard, the No. 16 seed, finished its season 27-23.
"We're very happy with our season," said Oxnard coach George Peraza. "Too bad we couldn't have extended our season, but somebody's got to win and somebody's got to lose.
"They just pecked away with singles and singles."
Keyed by Van Dieren's two-run triple, Cypress jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning.
A single and two Oxnard errors in the second inning had the Condors in a 5-0 hole.
Oxnard had four of its five hits in the sixth inning, when it scored its lone run.
Jenna Holly's RBI single drove in Caitlyn Heinz. But additional hits by Maranda Bennett, Janae Borrego and Jesica Alcala could not pull Oxnard closer.
"It's like (Saturday) when we had the bases loaded twice," said Pereza.
Sarah Strong was 3 for 3 with a double for Cypress, which moves on to next week's second round.
"It's now recruiting time for us," said Peraza. "We'll always try to improve as the years go by."
