Foreign correspondence: May 4
Harmony Davies, 22, is a Charlotte, N.C., native living in Florence, Italy, for 10 months. She works as a nanny for an Italian family with a 5-year-old.
Q: What is spring like in Florence?
A: It just got warm this week (mid-April) — this is the first day I'm wearing a T-shirt. It has been a long winter, but the weather is getting beautiful. Trees are starting to get leaves, and it's not too warm — about 65 degrees. Summers are hot.
Q: Do you live with your employers?
A: I have a little guest house that's very nice. The family has been in Florence for a very long time, and the neighborhood is great. I live across the bridge from Santa Croce, a large and famous church. Florence is kind of separated into neighborhoods, and Santa Croce is one. It has a lot of bars where younger people go. It also has trendy boutiques. Where I live is nice because we don't have too many tourists and students.
Q: If Americans your age were visiting, where would you take them?
A: I don't care much for tourist spots and art museums; my favorite thing is restaurants. Also, I've discovered the little towns out in the Tuscan countryside, like Montalcino and Montepulciano. There are a whole lot of cute towns all around.
Q: What do you do in these towns?
A: Usually, each is famous for the wine it produces. It's fun to taste the wines and walk around. The towns are usually on hills, so the views are great.
