Man who died while surfing is identified

The San Diego man who died Friday while surfing off Santa Cruz Island has been identified as John Wagner, 43, according to the county medical examiner/coroner's office.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death has not been performed, Armando Chavez, senior deputy medical examiner, said Saturday.

Wagner was surfing with friends when he went underwater for unknown reasons about 5 p.m., according to a Coast Guard official.
