Robles finds the motivation

Liz Robles couldn't complete four laps around the track in less than seven minutes as a freshman.

To be honest, there wasn't any motivation for the Hueneme High athlete to dedicate the effort to do any better, she said.

Two years later, Robles is the Pacific View League girls' 1,600-meter champion.

The junior needed just 5 minutes, 30.02 seconds to win the title Friday at Camarillo High.

After hearing repeated messages from veteran teammates that she had potential, "I finally listened," said Robles.

Rio Mesa's Valexsia Droughn won two individual events, including the third fastest girls' 100 time (11.90) in the state this year, Camarillo's Cassie Brooker set a meet record in the girls' 800, defending her title in 2:17.40, and Sean Alfino of Rio Mesa set school and meet records in the boys' 200 (21.68), which is the sixth best time in the state.

At the 2007 PVL Finals, Robles was third in the 1,600 and missed qualifying for the postseason by less than a second.

Determined to put fate in her own hands, Robles pushed the pace from the outset and won by more than four seconds to become the league's automatic qualifier.

"Instead of going for the (time standard),"  said Robles, "I wanted to make sure there was no doubt."

Not once, but twice. Robles came back later in the evening to win the 3,200.

Tyler Brown of Camarillo was a four-event champion. He captured the long jump (21 feet, 1 inch), 110 hurdles (15.64), 300 hurdles (41.33) and triple jump (40-9).

"Since the sixth grade, I've always been a hurdler," said Brown, the 2007 league 300 hurdles champion.

"I've branched out to the long jump and triple jump. This was only my third attempt at the triple jump."

Brown found good cause to becoming a multi-event athlete.

"Being more of a part of the team has changed my point of view," he said. "It has helped me to become a better athlete."

Besides winning the 100, Droughn captured the 200 (25.05) and was a member of Rio Mesa's meet-record setting girls' 4x100 relay (48.42).

The PVL final marked only the second time since early March that Rio Mesa fielded its best relay team of Droughn, Mariyah Lee, Sariana Hedgepeth and Takiyah Cotton. Injuries had limited appearances by one runner or more each week.

"Breaking the meet record should give them confidence," said Rio Mesa girls' coach Rick Torres. "I think they were being a little safe with their handoffs.

"There's no telling how good they would be at this point had they all been healthy."

Alfino's time in the 200 bettered the Rio Mesa record of 21.88 set last year by state finalist Josh Harrison. Alfino also won the 100 (10.76).

Hueneme's Jose Alcantar, a double winner last year, came into the league finals hurt and needing a solid performance to qualify for the CIF. He got it was a runner-up finish in the 3,200 behind Camarillo freshman Heydon Wooff.
