CAMARILLO

Vaccine information to be provided

"The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine A New Era in Women's Health" program will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Camarillo Health Care District, 3639 E. Las Posas Road.

A family nurse practitioner will present an overview and answer questions related to HPV and cervical cytology (pap smears).

Gourd Art Festival to include mask parade

The Channel Islands Gourd Society will display and sell some of their uniquely shaped and decorated gourds at its annual Gourd Art Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10.

The event will include a mask parade, a birdhouse raffle, live demonstrations on gourds, and a free children's make-and-take workshop.

The festival will be at the Santa Rosa Valley Clubhouse, 11701 E. Las Posas Road, Santa Rosa Valley area.

Fundraiser to benefit church and preschool

Mother's Day Scrapbook Crop Fundraiser will take place from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, 380 Arneill Road.

The event, which benefits the church and the preschool, will feature dinner, dessert, drinks, door prizes, silent auction, tips and more.

Doolittle Raid to be remembered May 10

The Commemorative Air Force museum at Camarillo Airport will commemorate the Doolittle Raid on May 10.

Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle led 16 World War II B-25 bombers, taking off the USS Hornet to attack Tokyo on April 18, 1942.

At 1 p.m., James Hinckley, retired U.S. Army colonel, will give a talk on this event. Following the talk will be photo opportunities with two World War II B-25 bombers and exhibits of the Doolittle Raid.

Postponed Fractured Fables' to open today

Global Village School to host open house

Global Village School, an international kindergarten through 12th-grade distance-learning program with a creative flexible approach and an emphasis on peace, justice, diversity, and sustainability, will host an open house for prospective families and interested community members.

Antique Appraisal Day set for Friday

The Ojai Valley Museum will hold an Antique Appraisal Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at 130 W. Ojai Ave.

Areas of evaluation will include prints, paintings, photos, china, glass, silver, pottery, textiles, books, manuscripts, entertainment memorabilia, furniture and jewelry. Other areas may be evaluated by bringing photographs and pertinent information for later appraisal at Bonhams & Butterfields offices.

Appraisers will evaluate up to five items at a cost of $5 per item for Ojai Valley Museum members or $10 per item for nonmembers. Museum memberships will be available for purchase.

Safe Boating Expo planned for May 10

The third annual Safe Boating Expo will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 10 at the U.S. Coast Guard Station, 4201 S. Victoria Ave., Channel Islands Harbor.

The event will include safety demonstrations, tours, booths and displays, food and beverages.

American Character' author to present talk

Mark Thompson, author of "American Character" on the life of Charles Fletcher Lummis, will give a presentation at 3 p.m. May 10 at the Oxnard Public Library in Meeting Room B.

Lummis was a photojournalist, magazine editor, Indian rights activist, adviser to President Theodore Roosevelt and author, among other things.

Strawberry Festival Gala set for Friday

The California Strawberry Festival Gala will be Friday at the Courtyard by Marriott, 600 E. Esplanade Drive.

Cocktails will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.

The fete is black tie optional and features a live band and gourmet dining.

The evening serves as a prelude to the annual festival at Strawberry Meadows of College Park in Oxnard the following weekend on May 17-18.

SANTA PAULA

Actress-director to teach class today

The Santa Paula Theater Center announces the second in its series of Organic Acting Technique classes with director and actress Andrea Tate.

This series will run for six weeks from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays beginning today through June 7 at the center's Back Stage, 125 South 7th St.

The cost is $25 per class or $140 for the complete series. Instruction will be geared individually for actors on all levels of experience.

Rabies vaccination clinic for pets offered

The Ventura County Department of Animal Regulation and The Ventura-Santa Barbara Veterinary Medical Association will host a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The clinic will be at a fire station, 536 W. Main St. Vaccination is $5, cash only.

Dog-cat licenses and dog spay-neuter vouchers will be available.

Licenses are $20 for spayed-neutered animals and $50 for unaltered animals. Checks or cash will be accepted for licenses.

Dinner to benefit music department

A benefit spaghetti dinner with live entertainment by members of the Ventura High School Music Department will be from 4 to 7 p.m. May 10 at the Ventura Elks Lodge, 2126 Knolls Drive.

Tickets include dinner, drinks and dessert, and performances by ensembles from the school's choir, symphonic band, string orchestra, wind ensemble and jazz band.

Opera singer to give talk, demonstration

Nicole Cabell, international opera star, will give an informal public talk and demonstration of vocal technique while coaching two voice students of the Performance Theatre for Young Artists on Wednesday, followed by a reception.

The talk and vocal coaching demonstration will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Cabell is in town to perform at the Ventura Music Festival on May 10.

The Jitterbug Swing Society to hold dance

CPA/Law Society to hold symposium

The Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics is one of the sponsors of the CPA/Law Society of Ventura County's Ethics Symposium Scholarship Fundraiser.

The symposium will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Pierpont Inn, Ventura.

Proceeds from the event fund scholarships for students at CSU Channel Islands; UC Santa Barbara; the Pepperdine School of Law; and the Ventura College of Law.

Additionally, attendance at the symposium provides four hours of continuing education credit for accountants and attorneys.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Gordon Binder, former CEO/chairman of the board of Amgen.

The cost is $30 for students, $60 for members and $75 for nonmembers.

Mother's Day Breakfast offered

Boy Scout Troop 127 of Agoura Hills will present the 45th annual Mother's Day Breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 11 at Malibou Lake Lodge, 29033 Lake Vista Drive.

The menu includes all-you-can-eat ham and eggs, pancakes, orange juice, coffee, tea or milk. There will also be door prizes donated by local merchants. Gift baskets will be raffled off.

CROP Walk and food drive announced

The Moorpark Community Hunger CROP Walk and Cantastic! canned food drive will be May 10.

Registration and canned food drop-off will begin at noon at the Moorpark Food Pantry, 609 Fitch Ave.

The walk will be at 1 p.m. and is about three miles long.

Historical Society plans Antiques Faire

The Conejo Valley Historical Society will hold its annual Antiques Faire from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10 at the Stagecoach Inn Museum, 51 S. Ventu Park.

The show and sale features antiques, art and collectibles, including silver, china, crystal and other tableware; jewelry and vintage clothing; kitchen items; toys; furniture; clocks and watches; books; and primitives.

Camarillo antiques authority Rita Faulders will present a lecture on "Carnival Glass."

Evaluations by knowledgeable experts are $5 per item. The $5 admission includes tours of the museum, cookies and lemonade. For more information, call the museum at 498-9441.

SIMI VALLEY

Royal High to hold swap meet benefit

Royal High is set to host a community swap meet for its spring basketball fundraiser.

The school is requesting donations of items to be sold. Individuals in the community may also sell their own items for a booth rental fee of $25, which will go for the basketball fundraiser.

The swap meet will be at the west parking lot of Royal High School from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 10.

A U-Haul truck will be on hand the night before for any large items to be delivered.

Community Council to wrap up season

The last meeting of the Simi Valley Community Council for the program year will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Thursday at the International House of Pancakes, 2525 Erringer Road.

The guest speaker will be Heather Phillips of ARC. Collections of needed items, especially bleach, individual toiletries and used clothing, will be taken for the Samaritan Center.

Regular meetings of the Community Council, which are open to the public, are held on the second Thursday of each month, from September through May, for a no-host lunch. After a short business meeting and guest speaker presentation, members and guests share coming events and needs of the organizations they represent.

The council also announced that the reservation forms and payment for the President's Breakfast on June 14, at a cost of $18 per person, are due by Thursday. The President's Breakfast will be at the Grand Vista Hotel and honors the outstanding volunteers from each member organization or agency for their community service during the past program year, according to the council's president, Candace Skor. The theme of the 2008 breakfast is "Ripples of Caring Hearts bring Waves of Volunteers." The guest speaker for the President's Breakfast is Simi Valley Mayor Paul Miller.

Busy Hands to hold annual plant sale

The Busy Hands Garden Club will hold its annual plant sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 10 in the community room of the Simi Valley Library, 2969 Tapo Canyon Road.

All proceeds will go to fund the club's community service projects, including planting and maintenance of the Simi Valley Library Rose Garden, May Day flowers for hospital and convalescent home patients, donating funds to plant trees in local parks on Arbor Day, Pennies for Pines to plant pine trees for nearby reforestation projects and donations to Care and Share and the Samaritan Center.

Rotary seeking sponsors for festival

The Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise is seeking sponsors for its Cajun, Creole Music Festival set for May 24-25 at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park.

The Cajun, Creole Music Festival has continually grown and evolved into what is now the second-largest Cajun festival west of the Mississippi, with more than 15,000 people attending.

The fundraiser relies on the generosity of individuals, local businesses, corporations and foundations and has allowed the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise to distribute net proceeds in excess of $1 million to nonprofit organizations, senior citizens, youth, families in need and community groups in Simi Valley, Ventura County and internationally.

There are numerous sponsorship levels to accommodate most individuals: Les Amis du Festival (Friends of Cajun) for $1,000 and Sponsors Les Plus Haut (Naming Sponsors) that range from $2,500 to $25,000.

Membership officer sought by library

The Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library is seeking a volunteer for the position of membership vice president. Duties include maintaining the membership database using Microsoft Excel, sending out yearly membership renewal letters and developing programs and activities to increase membership. These duties could be shared by two people, if one person was only interested in maintaining the membership database, and another person was more interested in working to increase membership.

The Friends is a nonprofit support group for the Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park Branch libraries. The group raises thousands of dollars to support library programs through the sale of used books, as well as through membership dues.
