Johan Franzen's second hat trick in three games fueled the visiting Detroit Red Wings' 8-2 rout Thursday night that completed a sweep of the injury-riddled Colorado Avalanche.
Franzen's nine goals in this series matched Colorado's total.
The Red Wings advance to the Western Conference finals against the winner of the Dallas-San Jose series which the Stars lead 3-1.
Rangers 3, Pittsburgh 0: Jaromir Jagr scored two goals and host New York staved off elimination.
The Penguins, who lost for the first time in eight playoff games this year, lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal 3-1. They will try again to finish off the Rangers in Game 5 in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Only two NHL teams have come back to win after trailing 3-0.
Avery still in intensive care, but improving: Rangers forward Sean Avery remained in an intensive care unit, two days after his spleen was lacerated during a playoff loss to the Penguins.
The internal bleeding, that has kept Avery in intensive care, stopped Thursday. If that improvement continues, he could be moved out of the unit this morning, Rangers spokesman John Rosasco said.
