Inmate found dead in cell at County Jail

A 37-year-old Ventura man died early Thursday while being held at the Ventura County Jail in Ventura, authorities said.

Joel S. Wood was found not breathing during a regular check of his cell at 11:44 p.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies and jail medical personnel immediately began administering CPR, authorities said. Fire Department officials and paramedics responded a short time later and took Wood to Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.

He was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m. Thursday, authorities said.

The cause of Wood's death was not known Thursday night, but authorities said foul play is not suspected.

Wood had been arrested by members of the Ventura Police Department and booked into the jail Tuesday on an outstanding warrant for petty theft and battery.

Opfor2,

Your comment is just ridiculous. This is the problem with forums where people can remain anonymous.

I consider myself extremely hard line when it comes to people who commit crime. But, that does not mean that I feel anything but empathy for a 37 year old who is in jail on a misdemeanor who loses his life. Get a clue man.

It is attitudes like this that make this world a very scary place. People have no regard for life and other people's feelings anymore. I am sure you thpught you were being funny when you made this comment. I just hope this person's mom, dad and other loved ones don't see it. Why don't you take the time to make the world a better place rather than spreading your anger and callousness on a public website.

Peace be with you Joel. My heart goes out to your family and friends. I'll never forget you.

OPFOR2-
I suggested removal of your comment from the star, I suggest others do the same - until it's removed. That was such a heartless statement.

ANNA- I agree with you! This could have been someones husband, father, brother, etc. My heart goes out to this family. Does sound somewhat fishy - wonder what happened? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

TheVeracious1, it took 45 minutes to pronounce him because of the time to get the paramedics there, perform CPR, transport him to CMH, assess him, and then prounounce him. How in the world does diabetes play a role in this? Denied insulin? Sue? You're not one of those longshoremen that were on strike yesterday are you?

Its an open forum. People deserve to have a right to express their opinion. Please, read the rules on the bottom. "Offended by someones comment" isn't listed. I agree though, OPFOR2's comments are offensive, but that's his/her opnion, no matter how ridiculas.

opfor2, I hope you make a mistake and find yourself sitting in a jail cell someday. Then you won't be so quick to condemn. The difference between a lot of the people in jail and those that are not is one thing; they were caught. How many times has someone commited a crime that could have landed them in jail? How about going 90 miles an hour on the freeway. You can be put in jail for that. So, opfor2, grow up, and just remember, Karma has a way of teaching people lessons in life. Your Karma will undoubtedly teach you a lesson.

Pjlove10-
Yeah, I'm offended by it, and I didnt even know the guy. It's called common decency - respect for others. What if a family member read that on this blog? How immature and cruel can some people be? Have some respect opfor2.

Holy CAPITAL letters.

Wow this has to be one of the biggest groups of hypocrites I have ever seen...

Just yesterday (and many OTHER days on many OTHER articles) they were calling for "head shots" and "capital punishment" to criminals, yet here we are with one found dead and you all crucify someone that speaks ill of them...

There is no listing yet for why he was most recently incarcerated, but he does have charges of petty theft, battery on a person, and under the influence of a controlled substance on his record.

If I had a brother, father, or son locked up for any of these activities, I'd say he deserves whatever he gets while incarcerated. In fact I'd be the FIRST ONE on this board denouncing him if I were related to this man.

Hopefully he rests in peace but I wish the commenters on this board would make up their minds on how they want their CRIMINALS to be treated.

People are so quick to assume. The article doesn't mention how he died. The jail has cameras and I'm sure after the autopsy, the truth will come out. Until then, no one will know if it was a medical condition, violent act, suicide etc. Some of you people sound so stupid making clueless assumptions and crying out lawsuit. Medical condition or not, this guy did something that caused him to go to jail. He died there. Yes it's unfortunate. But before jumping to conclusions, people should first know the facts.

Posted by Ventura22 on May 2, 2008 at 8:55 a.m. (Suggest removal)

He could have had medical issues, like diabetes or heart trouble. Unfortunately, people do die in jails, oftentimes during or shortly after the booking process. The types of people brought to jails are generally not the healthiest and fit members of society. Then there's the ever-present issue of substance abuse. This stresses the importance of a through medical check of any detainee who is to remain in lockup.

Is it necessary to TYPE IN CAPS?

Posted by Relvd98 on May 2, 2008 at 9:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Guess it is...lol.

Posted by Relvd98 on May 2, 2008 at 9:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Uuhhh...yes it does matter. Have you not heard that when typing in CAPS, you are making an emphasis that you're yelling?

Please ask anyone, I think I'm right.

I am Joel's sister and I did not read the comment taken off the site, thankfully, but I do want to thank all of those sending well wishes to our family. Joel was a good friend, brother and a son. Due to life circumstances beyond his control he had many demons to deal with and did not have the strength any longer. The choices Joel made were his own and they created the life for him that he lead. He died in custody due to circumstance, not negligence on anyone's part. He will be missed.

Posted by surfmedic91 on May 2, 2008 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Pog, there's a reason it takes so long, or so short for that matter compared to larger cities. You were probably innocent of the crime(s) you were arrested for and blame the deputies and CSO's for your stay in jail. You have nothing but time when you're in jail so why is it a problem?

scmom: I am very sorry for your loss. Thank you for jumping on here and being honest. Hopefully that will stop the angry posters here. I think we all know someone who hasn't made the right choices in life. My best friend was one of them. He died because of them. So sad that this has turned into a "bash the system" board.

My sincere condolences. May your brother now rest in peace without his demons.

scmom, just read your post. I'm sorry for your loss. My condolences to your family. Glad to hear negligence wasn't a factor. RIP Joel.

Posted by mantiger808 on May 2, 2008 at 11:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey FIVE_O, if you are going to use caps to draw attention to yourself (one word), you better tighten up your spelling and grammer. Have you heard of punctuations? I hope that your name doesn't represent my island home...if so, AUWE!
scmom put it so eloquently...her brother died from circumstance, not negligence...end of story.

Posted by surfmedic91 on May 2, 2008 at 11:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

mantiger, it's "grammar", not grammer. FIVE O is probably "5-0", the po-lice.

surfmedic91 ,Karma-what goes around ,comes around.
The wierd thing here is I was the second to post and that guys post was already removed. Yet some of you seem to know what it said? Now Im confused.
surfmedic91,This may have been answered already also since Im still reading. But not just anyone can pronounce someone dead. It has to be a doctor or coroner. (I do believe).
Please when people type in all caps I can not comprehend the spelling, etc.
Adam_Monroe .Your comment really disturbs me. Obviously you do NOT have children. Because a parent always loves and forgives thier children, always has hope for them and never would just put them out of thier life. ITs sad people would ever feel that way. I would never forget about one of my children no matter what they did.......I may feel they deserve jail depending on the case. But never would I stop loving them and give up on them.

Again I give my deepest Condolences to the family. May he RIP........God Bless!

Hopefully FIVE_O is still in school and has more time to learn about spelling, punctuation and grammar. As for the rest of you, you have no excuse. Get a life people!

The man was my Lovers son.
His father was FULLY aware of his sons problems and how early in life they started. He did ALL he could to help Joel and not enable him. G-D bless the man who helped him after his move from San Jose. The whole sad story of his death can be summed up by saying he was RELEASED from the hospital ( after being pulled from his room after a 3 day bender ) to the custody of the police on the misdemeanor charges and he died in th jail cell. Fault? sure, lot's of them. Jail,Hospital and in the end.....Joel
We hope he is finally at peace.

Posted by pmotherat on May 5, 2008 at 3:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I feel sadness for Joel's family. They are good people. It doesn't matter where or why he died. The fact is Joel is gone forever. We can all guess and speculate but he's still gone. We shouldn't use one persons passing as a vehicle for personal agenda or complaints on conditions we don't personally approve of or have control over.
Bless you Joel. Now you have peace.

SCMOM...I am sorry for your loss. I admire you for being honest and doing the right thing. You sound like a good person. So many people want to jump on the bandwagon and blame everyone else and file a lawsuit immediately. Thank you for not taking that course.
