Whisenhunt: Edwards not slowing down with age

PK Edwards is 82 going on 50. Or so it would seem. The ageless sailor has done it again. And again.

The year began with Ventura Yacht Club making Edwards the first recipient of its "Helm of Fame" award. Then recently, the Yacht Racing Union honored Edwards (in absentia, since he was off racing in a big event, more of which later) at the yacht club's Opening Day by awarding the YRU Baccarat Trophy for first place in the YRU Ocean Racing Series.

Those are pretty impressive accomplishments for the semi-retired doctor who still practices anesthesiology on a part-time basis.

So what has Edwards done lately? The octogenarian sailed his Catalina 42, Wind Dancer, to second in class (seven boats) and third in fleet (37 boats) in the recently completed 777-mile Corona del Mar to Cabo San Lucas Race. Crewing for Edwards were his son, Vance, and Don Olson, Doug Fajardo, Stan Nackdymon and Wyant Lauterman.

They sailed the distance in 4 days, 9 hours, 15 minutes, 28 seconds, finishing second behind Sabrina, a Calkins 50 from San Diego. Sabrina was skippered by Chris Calkins with noted sailboat designer Doug Peterson aboard, along with some well known Etchells sailors.

"The wind maxed out mostly at night at 25 to 35 knots with gusts to 40," Edwards said. "Many chutes were blown out, a spinnaker pole was broken on a Santa Cruz 50 and two boats bailed out at Ensenada."

Wind Dancer corrected out over such internationally known boats as Peligroso, Medicine Man, Magnitude 80, Pendragon and Grand Illusion.

Did I mention that Edwards is 82 years old?
