Rockfish, lingcod keep biting
Saltwater report
With temperatures soaring around the county last weekend, many anglers found relief by heading out to sea in search of rockfish, lingcod, sculpin and whitefish. Most got exactly what they were searching for, as the rockfish and lingcod continued to bite in strong numbers.
According to Chuck Brown at Capt. Hook's Sportfishing, almost every trip resulted in limits of rockfish and there were also plenty of nice-sized lingcod to go around as well.
Steve Moore of Oxnard and Mark Lambie each found good fortune while fishing on the Island Spirit off Santa Cruz. Both men landed 26-pound lingcods.
Alvin Faustino of Los Angeles also got in on the lingcod action, hauling in a 15.2-pounder while fishing on the Island Spirit.
Mike Elder of Ventura hauled in a 7.4-pound red snapper while fishing on the Seabiscuit.
"A lot of people came out to try and beat the heat and found out the fishing has been really good," Brown said.
The Island Spirit has open party trips going out both Saturday and Sunday.
Capt. Hook's is reminding anglers they are holding a lingcod special aboard the Island Spirit on May 6, leaving at 5 a.m. and targeting lingcod with live mackerel. The trip is to raise money for longtime Capt. Hook's customer Dan Gagliani, who recently had heart surgery.
The cost of the trip is $80. All proceeds will go to Gagliani and his family.
The folks at Channel Islands Sportfishing also said fishing continues to be very good.
John Van Dam of Bakersfield caught a 13-pound lingcod while fishing on the Sumo. Simi Valley resident Sara Gonzalez landed a 4-pound sculpin off Santa Cruz.
Gene Housewerth went out on the Island Tak and hauled in a 14-pound whitefish.
Louis Penaslar of Newbury Park landed an 8-pound red snapper on the Pacific Islander.
"On Mother's Day (May 11) mothers ride for free on all three-quarter-day and half-day trips," said Daniel McFarland of Capt. Hooks.
Capt. Hook's is offering a two-day trip on May 16, leaving at 10 p.m. with a cost of $350.
Half-day, three-quarter-day and full-day trips are running every day.
McFarland said the warm temperatures are heating up the water and the hope is that the higher water temperature will bring some seabass and yellowtail around soon.
Gail Seachrist at Port Hueneme Sportfishing said the Mirage went out with 19 anglers and came back with limits on lingcod.
Edward Motta from North Hollywood hauled in a 7-pound red snapper using squid while fishing on the Sea Jay off Santa Rosa.
"The fishing is really good and we have boats running every day," Seachrist said.
The Pacific Eagle has trips leaving Friday night and fishing Saturday and another leaving Saturday night and fishing Sunday. The Erna B has an open-party trip leaving at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
Anglers going out with Ventura Sportfishing have also had good luck, especially with rockfish. Bruce Pain of Los Angeles landed a 10.7-pound rockfish while fishing on the Coroloma.
They have open-party trips scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday.
Sea Landing in Santa Barbara reported several large halibut have been caught.
