League finals a hurdle to CIF Prelims
The Channel League Track and Field Championships are on the move.
After being anchored at Santa Barbara City College for years, the league finals found a home in Ventura in 2006 and 2007.
Tonight, Channel League athletes will compete on the 2-year-old all-weather track at Dos Pueblos High.
It will be one of five league finals scheduled over the next two days.
The championship meets determine individual and relay league champions as well as qualifiers for the CIF Prelims next week. Champions are automatic qualifiers for the Prelims. Others can advance by meeting performance standards.
Team titles have been decided in all leagues except the Tri-Valley and Frontier.
The Tri-Valley and Frontier finals will be conducted tonight at Carpinteria and Malibu, respectively.
On Friday, the Marmonte and Pacific View championships will be held at Moorpark and Camarillo, respectively.
Three-time Channel League boys' champion Ventura could have several waves of CIF qualifiers. Distance runner Michael Barnes, hurdler Rogelio Reyes and thrower Ryan Rosales rank among county leaders. Buena is led by county 400-meter champion Julian Carriger.
Amelia Mathis of Buena defends her 800 league championship fresh off a season-best time at the county championships. Ventura freshman Alexandra Morgan will contend for a league title.
Undefeated during the league dual meet season, Oak Park is favored to repeat as the Tri-Valley boys' champion.
The race for the TVL girls' team title could be dramatic.
La Reina was the outright dual meet champion. Sasha Blanchard, Tara Blanchard and Hanna Winter have been keys for La Reina. Oak Park, banking on points from its distance crew and county long jump champion Taylor Johnson, could tie for the title by winning the league finals.
Led by sprinter Cierre Wood, Santa Clara is gunning for the school's first boys' track league championship since 1963. Santa Clara had the Frontier League's best dual-meet record.
For the first time in school history, Royal won the Marmonte boys' and girls' team titles in the same year.
Among the league's top performers are Kevin Graf and Erin Baird of Agoura, Travis Edwards and Philip Burks of Royal, Liberty Miller and Jaimie McCormick of Simi Valley, Newbury Park's Jenny Mallen, Clayton Edwards and Brittany Harper of Calabasas, Maxwell Dyce of Moorpark and Garrett DeMirjian of Thousand Oaks.
With its sprint corps leading the way, Rio Mesa won the Pacific View League boys' and girls' team titles.
Freshman Valexia Droughn of Rio Mesa has moved among the state leaders in the girls' 100 and 200.
The biggest question facing Rio Mesa is the health of its girls' team. Sariana Hedgepeth, a 2007 CIF Division II finalist in the 100 and 200, has not been at full strength.
Other top PVL athletes are Camarillo 800 runners Cassie Brooker and Greg Kelly, Hueneme distance runner Jose Alcantar, Alexandra Cervantes of Oxnard and Cynthia Sanchez of Channel Islands.
