The Star's men's college basketball team
Deshion Inniss
Cal Lutheran
The 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior led the Kingsmen to a share of their first SCIAC title since 2001. The Hueneme High product started all but one game at point guard, averaging 11.8 points, 2.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He ranked second in the SCIAC in free-throw shooting (82.1 percent). Hit the game-tying 3 with 21 seconds left in regulation and game-winning layup with 36 seconds left in overtime in CLU's monumental upset of No. 3 Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Jan. 1. Went 4 for 4 from 3-point land, including his 100th career 3-pointer, in the clinching win over Pomona-Pitzer Feb. 26. Finished his career eighth all-time on the school's assist list (308).
Brandon Dixon
Ventura College
The 6-foot-7 power forward from Pacifica High returned to the Pirates after redshirting the 2006-07 season in the wake of the death of his mother, Valerie, to become the Most Valuable Player of the WSC North. Dixon averaged 16.8 points and 11.6 rebounds per game and shot 57 percent from the field. He was more effective after VC lost four players just after the New Year, piling up 12 double-doubles in 13 games. Within four days in late January, he had 27 points and 13 rebounds in a dramatic win over Oxnard and 24 points and 21 rebounds in a win over Hancock. Ventura's fourth local WSC North MVP since 1987 also was an All-State selection.
Dwight Jones
Moorpark College
The 6-foot, 170-pound freshman is the latest in a long, illustrious line of Raiders point guards from Sylmar High in Pacoima, which goes back to T.K. Reed (1999-2001). The key component of Moorpark's penetrating offensive system averaged 11.1 points, 3.7 assists and 1.9 steals for third-place Moorpark. Had his biggest game Jan. 19 against rival Ventura, scoring 28 points and converted 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. Shot a stellar 79 percent from the charity stripe. Remains as the key building block for the Raiders' 2008-90 season.
Josh Crawford
Oxnard College
The 6-foot-11 center from Long Beach, who transferred to Oxnard from the University of Iowa, lived up to his billing as a difference-making big man. Crawford averaged 14.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.9 blocks per game as the Condors won 10 WSC North games, the program's most since 1983. Piled up eight double-doubles in the last 10 games of the season as short-handed Oxnard chased Ventura in the WSC North standings. On Feb. 23, as the Condors faced a must-win against Moorpark on the final day of the season, Crawford piled up 24 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocks. Is being recruited by several schools, including Arkansas-Little Rock, Pepperdine and Southern Indiana.
